Cheapest way to go home?
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:55:33 PM »
One of the social workers who came over in my group has decided to return to the States. I promised to help her find the cheapest way to go home. Any ideas for websites? Looking for really cheap one way flights to Atlanta. She'll be traveling in July so nothing we've found so far has been inexpensive. I'd appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Sorry to hear that....I would check American Airlines and Continental Airlines sites, and see what they have on offer.  Right now would be the time to go, because it seems like the prices are just going to go up until after August.  I have used Expedia.co.uk, and have also seen other threads here in this section before about other sites.

I've found good deals on expedia and lastminute.com for summer travel last year.  Bum deal on your friend going home.  :(  Hope you're getting on better than she is?
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Have you tried using two carriers?  One to get from the UK to the US and then a different one to get to Atlanta?
I know that Airtran has flights from Newark and New York to Atlanta and they have sales all the time.

Is it possible to go via Ireland?  Cheap flight to Dublin on Ryanair/Easyjet then out to the states from there?

I always found a London airport to be cheaper then Dublin to the states.  There is just so much more competition to drive down prices in London.  Especially in the summer when there are lots of tourists in Dublin.  Just taking a look in that time period, dublin is about $300 more on a round trip then anything from London.

Delta from an airline is your best bet, since Atlanta is a hub.  The problem is that one-ways are quite expensive.  There was someone on here that said they found some cheaper one ways a while back, but I don't have a lot of experience there.

You can always buy a roundtrip as it is cheaper and just never use the return. I have done that a couple of times. Saved me loads of money!

Virgin was the cheapest one-way I have ever gotten.  It was February though and still about $350.

I usually find the best price for one-way tickets using Orbitz or cheaptickets.com.  You can book from the UK, but can't remember if you have to be using a US credit card.  For example, one-way to Edi in September on Orbitz...under $500.  At the airline site...$1300.
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

www.kayak.com shows the best available options (multiple for each website) and is fully customizeable. I use it for my prelimary research all the time, and then book direct with the cheapest options for the cheapest dates.

Thanks for all of the great ideas. We'll probably sped some time this weekend doing the search and I'll post what we end up finding.

And, Kristi, I'm having a very easy adjustment. Kind of scary, really....even though I've had some traumatic things happen since I've been here (death of a close loved one Stateside, I got "happy slapped" a few weeks ago, work is pretty stressful, housemate situation has gone pear-shaped, blah blah blah), I've not had any major problems with the adjustment. Of course, it's only been a little over three months so the big BLUES may be just around the corner.

That's good.  My transition didn't seem that rough either, I think because I'd spent a lot of time talking to other expats and had a bit of a support system before I moved over.  The blues came later for me... after a rough break up and a shite living situation.
