Cooking Spray and Egg Beaters
« on: June 11, 2006, 07:21:05 PM »
I haven't found any cooking spray here, much less the no calories type.  Are they available anywhere?  How about Egg Beaters or some other egg substitute?  Those were two things I used all the time in the US because I follow a low calorie eating regime and it's really frustrating that I can't find it here.

Tesco seems to have a few different varieties of cooking sprays. They are the same in terms of the US brands....at least that's my experience. As for the egg beaters, I'm looking for those too. hmmm

I think that's the one I bought.  In the supermarket, it's near the oil.

Aren't Egg Beaters basically just egg whites? It might seem a bit wasteful, but it would probably be just as healthy / low fat to separate eggs and either freeze the yolks for baking or dump them....

Actually they are more like beaten egg yolks but I'm not sure the substance so you can't use egg whites in substitute :(

This says they are egg whites, with nutrients added. Goodnessdirect has loads of egg substitutes, but most of them are for baking. They do have an omelette making one though.

It wouldn't surprise me that they are made up of egg whites but they are definitely the consistency and appearance of a beaten egg and work well in cooking. I'll try the site you mentioned for the omlette one. Cheers :)

So, I got me some Fry Light today :)  I just checked out that Goodnessdirect place for the egg substitute and what they have is substitutes for people who have allergies to egg but not really a low calorie choice.  I think I'll just use egg whites and the whole egg only when I have to.  Thank you all for your help!

Several egg whites with one egg yolk will give you the egg beater results...

and actually it works out tons cheaper and healthier in the long run...

it's what my family have been doing for years. You will learn the right yolk to egg white levels that suit your taste buds.  Plus egg yolks from grain fed chickens are not as high in fats and cholesterol as they once were.  Moreover, eggs are one of the few sources of Vitamin D.

Also, consider just buying an oil mister and putting in normal oil is a lot more cost effective .... :)

Plus real food should always win over processed weird stuff... what is the point of watching what you eat for health reasons only to add perservatives, chemicals and other "nutrients" and "natural flavorings" which are often code words for "hey we made it in a chemical lab"?

Sorry this post isn't targeted at any one poster... just some general observations... ;D

and egg beaters are just egg whites... and added back in nutrients you lose from taking out the yolk.. like the VitD....and coloring... so use egg whites, add some food coloring and take a vitamin pill.... and you have-----egg beaters!  ;D

and really how many calories does one little egg have?  Best to worry about other sources of bad fats, trans fats than one egg.

Still happy cooking and to each her/his own.

I hear what you are saying about the nutrients, etc. It does make it a little less appealing when you think about them being made in a lab. Yuck! I think for me its just pure laziness.  :D I have gotten use to separating out the yolks and stuff since I've been here, but I miss just pulling the carton out of the fridge and pouring it into the pan when I'm in a hurry.

Not only is it cost effective, but it tastes better and is ... natural.
I dont buy that Fry Light stuff because i saw it used at my friend's house and the stuff it squirted out was all weird and foamy and just looked like chemicals to me.   (I dont know what's in it).
