Hi RebelMinion,
I'd say it wouldn't be worth it for the following
you can pick up scooters quite easily in the US and probably at better prices - I know recently Vespa launched into the US market - so for the amount you'd sell off your scooter you buy here, you'd probably pick up a much newer (if not new) one in the US!
Factor in the Shipping costs, insurance costs, then making sure it's US road legal spec/checked. I know the US doesn't allow right hand drive cars unless over 25 years old, and as far as I'm aware there isn't anything the equivalent of the 'SVA' (single vehicle approval) test we have here.
On top of that, if the scooter you get here IS US road legal, you may need to pay import duties or similar taxes when bringing in the vehicle to the US - and on top of that, depending on which state you take it to, there may be other red tape/issues before you can legally ride it on the roads!
Best thing is to find out for sure whether the scooter you want or want to get is already US road legal, if it is, things may be a little easier. If not, I'd say it's not worth it at all.
This is all based on what I found out a couple years ago after I Imported an F150 Harley Davidson truck here (for sale in the classifieds!) I thought about exporting 'interesting' UK vehicles to the US - but I found that in this scenario, the USA is definitley NOT the land of the free! wayy too much legislation and red tape - much better to export left hand drive cars to the US. Scooters may well have different requirements - so do some research!
Cheers! Dennis! West London UK!
