« on: June 26, 2006, 11:54:10 PM »
I am trying to get a job as a nurse in the nhs.  ONce you have been offered employment how long does it take to get a work permit?  Curious to see if the NHS is slow or not since there is a shortage of nurses?  ANyone have this experience?

It depends on whether the position you are applying for is shortage list, and whether the HR department get their arses into gear and do it properly.

Of course, your application will have delays as it can't be lodged until you have left the UK, and once it is approved you will have to apply for entry clearance.

Don't count on anything to do with the NHS to be speedy.... I start work with them next week and it's taken a solid two months of hassle to actually get to this point (oh, and I am still going to be working without a contract for a week). I didn't need a work permit but I can't imagine that it would be quick and easy. Don't give up though - you just need to be very proactive! Good luck!

In my experience it doesn't matter. The problem is the disconnect between the people who want to hire you and HR. The HR departments are in their own little world.... The people actually hiring me are absolutely desperate to have this particular post filled - they wanted me to start a month ago. But HR does things in their own special way.  ::)

Anne - I think you are dead right there.  I know that applications are always going to be subject to delays when I have to deal with HR departments!!!

Elizabeth - if you get a job as a registered nurse or midwife then it will be shortage.  I assume you have checked that you can practice in the UK.
