Getting marriage recognized in the US?
« on: July 06, 2006, 11:25:50 AM »
I'm sorry if this is off topic, I'm a bit unsure where else to put it. Now that I've gotten married and I have my marriage visa in the UK, how do I get my marriage recognized in the states? (I'm US citizen)
They told me when I applyed for the marriage that its up to me to get the marriage recognized in the US, but I dont know how to do this. Me and hubby went back to visit family, and I felt really weird, having to use my maiden name for everything inc. plane tickets and such. I went to the website of the us embassy in the UK some time ago, but I dont see anything there that would help me. I guess I'm just a bit stuck on this. Any help would be great, thanks. :)

your marriage is already recognized in the US- as long as you were married in accordance with UK law (which if you have your FLR is obviously true) then you are legally married pretty much everywhere else, including the US.  Now if you're talking about changing your name, then that's fairly simple to do- start with your social security card and then change over everything else after that's done.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

I'm a bit worried about changing my name on my passport, because this one has my marriage visa in it, which is in my maiden name.

You'll just carry both passports at the same time.  (or you can pay to have the visa transferred to the new passport)
