Manchester to Stonehenge
« on: July 06, 2006, 03:37:25 PM »
I have to rent a car to travel from Boro to Manchester in order to put my dogs on a plane on a Friday morning at 9:30 AM.  Has anyone in the Manchester area been to Stonehenge from there?  About how far of a drive would it be?  I have only driven like 5 times in the year i've been here, is it a difficult drive, or mostly highway?  Is Stonehenge even worth the trek?  Anyone have some advise for this last adventure before I leave the country?

Bloodied, but not beaten!

I went to Stonehenge last year with my DF, I thought it was completely overrated.  You pay £5.50 to get in and they give you a wand to listen to with interesting bits and pieces on it, and make you walk around it.  They don't allow you up close and personal to it anymore as people kept chipping bits of the stone away as a souvenier.  It's not something I would go back to see again.  I have uploaded some photos http://talk.uk-yankee.com/gallery/index.php?cat=13662

We travelled from Bath, which took about an hour, so I couldn't really help on the Manchester drive sorry, but the roads closer to Stonehenge were a little bit more contryfied and twisty.

Agree about the twisted roads near Stonehenge.  We drove to Plymouth over Easter and passed it by coincidence.  It looked very small from the road.  The road got pretty congested with all the drivers gawking and tourists slowing up to turn in.

Re the chipping away of the stones.  They had to replace the original grave stone of Flora MacDonald because tourists kept chipping away the headstone.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

Well, you can hit stonehenge in one of two major directions. Both ways take you to Birmingham from Manchester, and then split west (towards bristol) and east (towards london). Stonehenge is basically in between Bristol and London, about 20 minutes or so from the major motorway between.

It wouldn't be my best idea for a daytrip from Manchester, that's for sure, and is best done in combination with a trip to Salisbury (cathedral, etc) and a trip to see the white horses...  using either Bristol (Bath!) or London as a home base.
