Christmas in London?
« on: July 07, 2006, 02:08:17 PM »
My last day of work is November 30, 2006; I've been downsized. (No tears, I'm happy about it.)  DH and I are planning a 3+ week trip.  One week to visit my nephew in Vienna, one week to visit his relatives in Devon, and finish the trip with one week in London.   We'd really like the trip to occur in that order: Vienna, Devon, London,  but it means that we will possibly be spending Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day in London.

Are we going to have any difficulties with transportation or finding restaurants during these days?  On the other side, are there any unique or interesting things we will experience by being in London on these days?

The itinerary is not set yet so we could change if necessary.  Unfortunately it does all have to take place in the month of December.  DH has to be back for a trip to San Diego on January 4.  We thought of postponing the whole trip to January but he's not able to take three weeks off in January.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

There is an email and phone number listed for London travel information.

If I remember correctly, Christmas eve and Boxing Day were on a Sunday service schedule and nothing/very very little (Heathrow express but no tube and buses) on Christmas day.  Taxis are available but with an extra fee because of the holiday.

There are some restaurants available and of course some hotels will provide an offering.

google "Christmas in London" and you will find info on Christmas 2005 to give you an idea of what's on.

Have a great time. Christmas in other countries is always a memorable time.

Go see "The Snowman" in the West End!

Christmas Day is going to be tough, but Boxing Day is a huge shopping day in the UK.  Actually from Christmas to New Years is HUGE shopping period.  Of course there are all the Christmas lights and just the vibe of Christmas in London.  I have been there once during the time and there is plenty to do.

Christmas in London is great if you can get tickets to a show, find nice places to eat, see the lights etc.  Just one thing...if your husband doesn't like shopping, he will find the Boxing Day sales hell on earth.  It will be an experience, but one he may not like.

For that matter you might not either.  It is VERY crowded, and VERY pushy.
