Bicycle roadrules?
« on: July 07, 2006, 10:36:53 PM »
Next week I'll start riding a bicycle to work. I was wondering what the UK roadrules are for this? I know I can't ride on the sidewalk and have to ride in the road with traffic,(which I am terrified of!!) I've seen people ride in the middle of the road infront of traffic..do I have to do this or can I drive on the side of the road? Also back in the states they kept going back and forth with riding with traffic and riding against traffic, I assume I have to ride with traffic even though I'll be riding on the side of the road (If I can)
What about traffic circles? Do I go around one like I was in a car????
And anything else anyone could give me some info about will be great

Well done EY!  I think it's great you're riding to work.

You are considered a vehicle so you have to follow the rules of the road.  On some roads there are cycle lanes but they are inconsistent and may just end without warning.  Basically, it is taking your life into your own hands, riding in traffic.  Best be safe and find less travelled routes.  DH rides almost exclusively and this is what he does.  He finds it a bit scary in traffic.  And about round abouts - yes it is safer to be a part of traffic than try to cross as a pedestrian.  Also, GET A NEON REFLECTIVE VEST so that you are very visable on the road.  If you have anymore questions about bicycle commuting, just ask. I live with an expert.

If you are in a lane and it is narrow, take the whole lane.  Don't put yourself at risk by squishing over to the side where cars are parked.   the cars will pass you when it is safe to do so.  Riding in traffic takes a certain amount of agressiveness but you'll get the hang of it soon.

Riding the rollercoaster of life without a seat belt!

http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/03.htm is the excert from the Highway Code.

I cycle in London, and once you get used it it's not as bad as it first seems.  The only advice I would have that differs from MrsP is about taking the whole of the lane - this is only safe when there is no traffic behind you, as otherwise cars will try to shunt past.  I go to the left of the lane, but always making sure that I have the ability to pull into the centre in plenty of time to avoid parked cars.

This http://www.cyclingplus.co.uk/ridingadvice.asp is a good site too.

Oooh, very useful websites! *bookmarks*

I personally cannot wait to start bicycling in the UK!

The one safety thing I'd mention about cycling close to parked cars on your left is to watch for car doors swinging open. Being doored is not fun (i have a scar to prove it), and it seems to be pretty common in the US. Unless the driver looks in the rear-view mirror or behind them as they open the door, they'll not see you. Of course, cycling in the middle of the lane seems to piss drivers off (unless you're really fast), so there is no winning.  ::)

Since I bike often, I'm most worried about re-learning my peripheral vision clues. I plan to stick to side roads for a long time. :)
