When I enquired it depended upon church or civic ceremony, the civil ceremony you had to live in the area for 7 days, meet with the registrar and then there was a 15 day wait on top of that.  Most local council websites have the guidlines for civil ceremonies.  I think it maybe different if it is a church wedding.

Chara is right!  You have to be in the town you are getting married 7 days before you can register, after you register you have to wait 16 consecutive days and on the 16th day you can marry.

I would also check the registry office in your area specialises in international marriages.  I spoke to my local one and I was told that I had to speak to the registrar in Newcastle as my office did not deal with international marriages.

Chara,

It seems you and I had similiar experiences

Becky

Ok the registrar said something to me about having bands read, please don't take this as gospel but I remember hearing that if our bands were read (meaning the Vicar asked the church on 3 different occasions if anyone objected to us getting married) that we didn't have to do anything with the waiting or the registry, but our Viccar didn't agree but I think that all depends on your Viccar plus my registry office wasn't that up on things, the woman sort of gave me a lot of inconsistant untrue information, but that might be something to ask about.

Chara is right!

No-one has ever said that about me before! hehe  :P

The delay kinda put me off a little, which is why I opted to run off to Gretna Green, it's just the 15 day wait period there.  Zeusy, I beat you to a Mrs. by just three days :)

If you are divorced you also have to wait for your divorce paper to be verified. In my case this made the wait a little longer than two weeks.

Banns only need to be announced if it is going to be a Church of England ceremony. (OK, so this might be true of other religions as well, but I've got no idea.) Since she is going to have a civil ceremony (in the registrar's office), there are different rules.

A Wednesday, it worked out to be a lot cheaper than a weekend wedding!
