different names US vs. UK
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:56:27 PM »
guya/Lizzit/anyone else:

In the US I use my married name for all tax/financial purposes (it's on my social security card, investment accounts, bank accounts).

In the UK I use my maiden name for the same (my NIN, my bank accounts, my work).

Do you see any problems with this?  I asked the HR people in my office if I could use my married name for 'official' purposes like my paycheck and they said NO, I'd have to use it for everything like the company directory, etc.  I do NOT want to do that as professionally I've always been known by my maiden name.

I'm thinking (read: hoping) it is not such a big deal as the US will only know about my Uk earnings, bank accounts etc. through my tax filings and that is all just on their forms (ie there are no 1099/W2 forms).

I am the opposite. Maiden in the US, married (usually)  in the UK.  I filed my US taxes under my maiden name. I got my refund check in the post (I worked in the US from Jan through March 2005). The check had my married name on it.  To deposit the money in my UK bank account, I had to show my marriage certificate. That was all.

In the US, you use what's on record with the US Department of Social Security.  That's usually what's on your SS card, unless you've changed it officially witht he DSS.  I do not know the legal requirements in the UK, however, the US does not care what you do here.

US bank accounts will cash a cheque made out to anyone if you present it, UK bank accounts only cash cheques if they are made out to the same name as that showing on the bank account.  You can get around this by having your name as "Jane Maiden Married" rather than "Jane M Married" on your bank account, or by using "Jane Q Married nee Maiden".

Cool - that's what I was hoping to hear!  Thanks!
