I am not going to buy it for £120 in UK, I know that they are very sheep in Burxelles around 30-45 euros. So I am looking now in US based.

Do you mean military bases?  Unless you have reason to get one, I don't know they'd let you in to buy a transformer.  The only one I can think of is Lakenheath AFB.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I think you've got to be military or a dependent spouse in order to be able to even go on base, let alone buy anything there.  Why not look for a source online?

You do indeed have to have a military or dependant ID card to get on any military installation. RAF Alconbury is the closest to me and Im in Coventry. If youre looking for transformers or voltage adapters send me a PM and Ill let you know where we got ours when we first moved here. There is some shop in Coventry that made one for us. Good luck!

oops, hubby just told me that shop isnt there anymore but try Maplin.      www.maplin.co.uk

The ready-made units which Maplin stocks are limited to about 300VA:

For a much wider range of transformers, try here:

Shipping direct would probably be too expensive, but if you have someone Stateside who can bring one over for you, you could also try here:

are you connected someway to the military...ie retired - or at least have a military ID card??  If not, then you cannot purchase anything from a US military base.  And if anyone buys for you, they can get into big trouble since that would be considered "black marketing" and they could lose their privileges.  Suggest you try another route if you aren't eligible.  If you are eligible, the closest military base to birmingham is Croughton located near Banbury.

As an Army veteran, I can confirm what previous posters said: you cannot go to a military base PX unless you are a veteran, servicemember or DOD employee (plus a few other rare exceptions).

You can buy a 220-to-110 transformer from just about any electronics or travel shop for less than $50; certainly not 120 pounds. Try Electronics Row on Tottemham Court Road in London.  I bought mine the US for about $25.

see this link.
http://www.airlinktransformers.com/american-transformers.asp

US3000/2    3000va 230v to 120v Stepdown transformer   £130.00
US2000/2    2000 va 240v to 120v Stepdown transformer  £85.00
US0050      45va 230v to 120v Stepdown transformer          £12.00
US0300      300va 230v to 120v Stepdown transformer        £23.00

The price of transforma depents on VA or watt.  In order to run a Refrigator, you will need 1000 Watt

The power consumption is stated in VA or Watts and can in most instances be considered the same, 300W = 300VA

Most appliances will have a rating label on the back Stating voltage and power for example: 120vac 198va in this case choose a 200va transformer
Always check individual rating label or instruction whenever possible.
If an inadequately rated transformer is used, the transformer will cut out periodically or blow fuses. In all cases it is important that the transformer is rated above the appliance with which it is to be used.

See the link below http://www.airlinktransformers.com/transformer-guide.asp

My friend told that he used to buy staff from US base in UK and I used to do the same  in SC ( Fort Jackson).

Thanks

Unfortunately, a refrigerator is not one of those instances.  VA (volt-amperes) equals watts only for purely resistive loads.  As soon as you introduce anything which has inductance (and that means anything with a motor) then VA and watts can become significantly different.  Larger motors in particular can have a power factor which makes the VA rating considerably higher than the wattage.

There's also the point that motors (especially the larger types in fridges, freezers, washing machines, etc.) tend to take a surge of power when first started, so it's often necessary to use a larger transformer than the one you might choose based solely upon the VA rating.
