Medical Exam
« on: August 01, 2006, 02:47:14 AM »
My hubby just received his packet explaining the visa, affidavit of support, medical, etc.  He was extremely taken aback by the amount of checks they do medically and felt it was a huge invasion of privacy.  I had told him that there would be an exam, but didn't know the level of detail.

Has anyone else who's gone through this had a very negative reaction to it?  If so, did you/your S.O. find it ok once he/she had the exam?

thanks!

My husband did it when he applied for his fiance visa to come to the US.  We did find it invasive and the idea that you can be denied a visa based on medical conditions to be disturbing.  He was willing to do anything to come and be with me though, so he treated the same way he treated all the crazy questions on the paper application.

We still have his chest x-ray upstairs (you have to carry it on the plane with you!).

I have never heard of a medical exam to move to the UK. Is this only a US requirement?  :o

US citizens moving to the UK don't need to have any sort of medical exam- however, a medical is compulsory for citizens of any country (including the UK) moving to the US, which is the case here.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

I was horried at the level of intrusion for the medical after I'd read a particularly intimate account of someone's medical on another forum; in fact it completely stressed me out but in the end, the Dr could not have been nicer, explained his way around everything (when he was going to do something and why) and made sure the female nurse was there for the "sexual disease" check and he made it so quick it was over and done with.

I went to Scotland for mine and it was really no big deal and I am not a "drop em" kind of girl!

I think I PM'd you with the info to a site started by a former UKY member called diveintoamerica.com and there's loads of resources/experiences there for you to tap in to if you care to take a look.  The site is specifically for American & UK Expats & repats and everyone is welcome.

Your hubby will be just fine, it's really not as bad as it seems and you can look at this way, it's a free medical as a peace of mind thing.

Good Luck

Yes, you did PM me - thanks!  I've been on this site, but just haven't signed up yet, which I will do.

Thanks for all of your stories!
