Luggage Storage...
« on: January 24, 2004, 07:10:28 PM »
Okay...here is the problem...we are headed to the UK in March...International luggage allows us two pieces each.  BUT then we are also going for a long weekend to Barcelona luggage allowance one piece.... we are flying out of and into Gatwick so can't leave it with family...so anyone have any good ideas (aside from attempting to pack light) for where we can store our luggage near Gatwick that 1. won't cost an arm and a leg and 2. won't have the anti-terrorist teams out trying to blow it up.  :)

I don't suppose you are hiring a car for your UK portion of the trip? Nah, that would be too easy. Um, thinking...

We actually are, but we were planning on dropping it off when we flew out of Gatwick.   :-/
Basically it looks like this.. 11th arrive LGW, rent car, drive to Plymouth....17th leave Plymouth stay the night someplace between there and London...18th drop off car at LGW, fly to Barcelona..21st arrive from Barcelona stay to expensive but close by Le Meridian at LGW 22nd fly back to US  :'(. . . So it's between the 18th and 21st that's the problem.

I wish I lived close to LGW...or was going to be in that area at the time, but neither, I'm afraid. The trouble is, years ago, IRA bombings in London, they stopped even using lockers in train stations, and people are reluctant to hold things for other people (strangers to them)...I mean, even as part of a business. 10 years ago, maybe even longer, it would have been a no-brainer. I still see storage lockers all over the place; most just aren't used.

The only other thing (if you can't find any volunteers closer to LGW) is to mail the uneeded stuff back to yourselves, you know, like dirty laundry, and use the lightest bag you have, or just box it and fold up one bag to store inside the other. That way too, you would have space in the folded bag to get some loot to take back with you on the UK->US leg of your journey.

Well, as if you'd want to...I've never seen the dollar so weak!

Well...then again...LOL, sillier things have happened. It just twigged that you're going to Plymouth. You'll be driving within 10-20 miles of where I live (and I'm assuming you might want to top by Stonehenge?).

If you're having a real problem and can't find any other solutions, and want to do the mail thing and don't have time to get to the Post Office, it wouldn't be too difficult to meet up someplace while you're en route back to Gatwick. I can do the Postal run for you. You wouldn't even have to find a box. ;D

Then again, would be nice to meet up anyway!

Thanks LisaE!  I think we might have to pack light, but I do think I shall have to try to at least meet up with you for a coffee or something since I see you are basically en route.  I'll let you know as soon as things are a bit firmed up! Though you have to promise not to reveal how truly nutty I am to anyone.  ;D
