Now I'm cooking with gas...
« on: August 03, 2006, 10:58:38 PM »
...and I never have before!

Our burners work fine, no problems there whatsoever.

We wanted to use the oven though and we can't get it to heat up.  We have an indesit model - it's a few years old but our landlord didn't have a manual for it and I must not be looking in the right places online for info.

We turn one dial to a temperature, turn another dial to an icon that looks like it's representing the bottom burner, then push the same ignition button we use for the range top but nothing.  What am I missing?

In my experience, the oven lights itself, but it takes about half a minute. Hrm!

I love cooking with gas, much more responsive and the best thing for sensitive foods like eggs.

We have the same brand of oven.  On ours, there are two dials--one says 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and a little thermometer.  The other dial has the degrees.  We always put the oven on "4" and then select the degrees.  We have to flip the power on at the wall for the oven to work.  We don't press the range ignition button for the oven.

Does your oven light come on at all, or is it just that the oven doesn't get hot?

Ok, got it!  Ours didn't have the fuse issue - we just had to turn it on and let it sit for a little bit.

Thanks for the help, I can't wait to bake some cookies!

For the record, you'll also find some models which have a separate button which you need to hold in for a few seconds during and after lighting.   It's a flame-failure device which is designed to cut off the gas supply to the oven burner if the flame should be blown out for any reason.    Sometimes that button can be incorporated into the oven temperature control, i.e. set the required temperature, then press and hold the knob in while lighting.
