how much do homes cost where you live?
« on: August 13, 2006, 04:55:47 PM »
At least to your knowledge? What do you get for your money?

I'm a nosy parker, but we're curious about how much homes cost, and what they're like.  :)

Latest stats for a 2 bedroom 'home' - and keep in mind that 70% of Edinburgh's housing stock is in the form of flats - is £200,000.

The average wage is £23,000/annum.

In our old neighbourhood, which was well-established with 1920s/1930s homes and popular with older couples and families with older kids, the house next door sold for £215k (3 bed semi, large gardens) in January and the one across the street went for £165k (2 bed semi in need of modernisation) in March.

Our current neighbourhood, which is brand new and full of couples and younger families, the houses are all 3 or 4 bedroom townhouses, semis, and detached houses and the prices ranged from £140k up to £260k.

We're up north in Newcastle upon Tyne.

before putting in an offer anywhere- my advice would be to do a bit of homework on what houses on that street, postcode, area actually sold for.  not the listed price or what you heard something was sold for.  you can check on rightmove.co.uk  now it takes about 4 months or so for sold houses to actually register on this site.

houses on my street are listed as 200,000 to 215,000.  but they go for much less.  hence, why i felt my offer of 192,000 for my house was acceptable.

information, information, information.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Yes, I love checking out prices on rightmove...we paid £12k and £13k less than our neighbours for an identical house.   ;)

Our area varies a lot (Reading). A small two bed terraced can cost between £150-230k depending on where it is. You really wouldn't even want to consider the area's that are in the £150k range.

Three bed semi.....£230-350k, again depending on the area. New flats being built around the corner, a 2 bed which I hear is more like a 1.5 bed is starting at £230k.

That's the problem with where we live.....its very spotty. You either take a chance on a not so nice street or over mortgage yourself for not very much in return. I love to watch Location, Location, Location and while house prices can be high anywhere, I see a much better housing stock in other areas.

North London - Zone 3 on the tube (Highgate and Finchley).

2 bedroom flat - 230-270K. No garden, no off street parking.

Needless to say, we're looking to leave in the next few years.  Not sure where yet, but probably farther north, someplace where you need a car to get to work.

It's not so much the prices, b/c they're so far beyond what we'll ever earn buying is a non-issue, it's the fact that the rents are obscene.

Flats in this part of town regularly sell for £200,000+.  One beds for £115,000+.  And this isn't the creme de la creme, I might add.  The traditional tenement 2-bed across the street just went for £183,000.  It's two floors up, no lift, no off street parking and single paned windows.  No central heat, either.

There's a converted loft being reconfigured down the street - two beds start at £237,000 and there are 'under offer' signs up in the windows of many units.

The things aren't even close to finished yet, either and they're across the street from a pub where there have been 3 murders in the past 5 years and next to a council tower block.

We have off street parking - no garden.  Just our basic costs, rent, council tax and power, are now £715/month - and that's w/capping our power bill till 2007.

That's seen as pretty reasonable for a two-bed, 2nd floor unfurnished.

Our wages are not weighted.

Can't really see a future for us here, anymore.  The council is having to close 6 primary schools due to falling enrollment.

Families flee in droves to East and West Lothian, the Borders, Central Belt and Fife.

I'm starting to get a bit sick of it, tbh.  Am over it.

It's a lovely city if you're rich or a tourist.

But what city isn't?

We're doing research - a lot - into moving elsewhere.

It will happen, just a question of when and where.

Habitat for Humanity is coming to Edinburgh.  Yes, there really is that much poverty in some places here.

The city has just been named the 2nd most expensive cost of living-wise in the UK.

Behind Cardiff.

Possibly they figured since wages are higher in London, it somewhat offsets the cost of living?  :-\\\\

Does seem rather strange, though.
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Check this out.  We've walked by these houses and I wondered what they sold for.  Good thing I'm sitting down or I might have fallen over when I saw the price!!!!!!!  :o
