Passport question
« on: August 31, 2006, 12:20:19 AM »
I'm curious. How long does it take to get a passport?

I'm wondering b/c I'm trying to figure out how long my fiancee & I need. Theoretically I'm sure we should've been doing wedding stuff MONTHS ago, but we just recently decided to get married when I'm over there in January. Eek!
XOXO Heather

my passport took eight weeks to process (normal processing) back in March/April.  They say it's supposed to take no longer than six weeks, but sometimes they get backed up and it takes a little longer.  If you pay for expedited service you'll get it much sooner, within two weeks.

I just got my passport last week - it took twenty days. I figure part of the reason is because I probably applied at a somewhat off-season time.

Looks like I may have to apply for a replacement, as my US passport has STILL not turned up.  Anyone had to apply for a new passport in conjunction w/reporting their old passport as lost or stolen?  Did it hold things up?  I'm leaving in about 6 weeks (yay!) and worrying about getting it in time...

It depends on the service you get.  I paid over $200 for my passport because I did the expedited service.  I got mine in about a week.

Wow prices must have gone up.  I did the expediated thing about 3 years ago and only paid $100. I got it back within a week.

Yes, you can expedite it, but I wouldn't wait.  Mine took about 6 weeks to get, but I didn't expedite.  You never know what could happen.  You should definitely get it taken care of right away, especially if you've got trip plans already.

Ditto- it sucks to be freaking out when you've got a trip in 3 weeks and your passport isn't here yet!  So definitely do it ASAP so you can cross it off your list and worry about other stuff :P

Oh yes, I'll definitely be sending off for a replacement this week.  (And paying for expedited service....sigh....)  I was just wondering if it would take longer to process as I was reporting my other passport lost at the same time.

My passport was stolen (in my car when my car when stolen. sheesh!), and it didn't seem to take an unusual amount of time for them to process my application. I brought my childhood passport in as proof of identity, and I had the stolen passport's number.

Did you report your passport stolen yet?  I'm prettysure you'll need the police report number or case number.  My passport was stolen and when I applied for a new one, I had to submit the Police Report Number.  Since you are leaving soon, I would pay for the expedition, but my replacement was in my hands in less than two weeks after I applied and I didn't pay extra.  I think it might be different since it's a replacement and not new.

The only downside, and I do get asked when I get back to the US is where it was stolen? On the last page "This is a replacement passport for a stolen passport." is printed.  US Immigration ALWAYS asks me.

I think hers is just misplaced, not stolen.  DH lost his and had to get a new one and it has the same stamp as yours but it just says 'lost' rather than 'stolen'.  No one's ever asked him about it!

Yep, it's lost.  I've seen it since returning from the UK, and I'm sure it's misplaced and not stolen.  It's just not where I usually keep it w/my UK passport and my daughters' passports.  I've been searching for a couple of weeks now and haven't been able to find it anywhere.  Can't think of why I didn't put it with the other three....  [smiley=dunce.gif]
