Yes, i'm her boyfriend
« on: February 02, 2004, 06:38:06 AM »
Hi all,

My name is Sean, and i'm boyfriend of Heather (aka Terinth).  She's asked me to put something in here to introduce myself, so here goes.

I am 23, and I am currently living in Shrewsbury, England AND Flagstaff, AZ.  I work in Formula 1.  For the benefit of the Americans on here, F1 is the highest echelon of motorsport.  They drive real cars, not those silly NASCAR things, and nobody says "boogity boogity boogity" when somebody spins off.  I am a freelance statistician and journalist, and I'm scheduled to do work for 8 different countries' TV and radio broadcasts this year (including the UK, Ireland and the USA).  I still can't work out why they pay me for it.  They seem to think it's like, proper work and stuff.

Myself and Heather have been together for 4 years, and without sounding aloof, our relationship seems to be one of the strongest of anyone we know.  It seems that normally couples don't like to be sociable around each other by now.  Meanwhile, we're still slaves to the Red Lobster romantic dinners, cuddling up and stuff that would generally cause others to hurl.  By the way, what's with TV monitors at Red Lobster?  Who in their right mind goes there to watch ESPN!?

Most of everything else you need to know has probably been explained by Heather.  Our adventures for this year include snowmobiling across western Iceland (again, laughingly part of my so-called "job"), following Euro 2004, moonlighting in Monte-Carlo, doing stage setup at a Peter Gabriel concert and building a new ballpark for my old team.  I get bored easy, so I need lots of different stuff to do :)

Wow!  You sound like a busy guy!  :)

Welcome to the show.  Hope you enjoy it here and keep posting.  Maybe you can frequent the spouse house and give our significant others some tips on that whole cuddling and romantic dinners thing, if you get a few minutes sometime.  ;)

Glad to have you here!

Hi Sean and welcome!  Glad you decided to stop by.  I agree with Wish in that you seem busy, but that's a good thing!

My husband would agree with you 100% on Nascar.  I guess after seeing F1 watching a bunch of men driving around in a circle is not exactly exciting.  It's like tailgate parties though...time to sit around with friends and drink lots of beer.  I actually leave not too far from the Atlanta Motorspeedway (not the insterstate though  it might seem that way to some folks!)  I have never been to a Nascar Race and honestly don't get it, but maybe it's a part of the Southern culture I missed. ;D

Anyways..keep on posting and we will see you around!

I used to think the same thing, then we started watching NASCAR (to make my FIL happy), and I GET IT!  It's a long, hot game of chess with more subtlety and finesse than is immediately apparent to the casual viewer.  I can still get a good nap in during a long race,  ;), but now I consider myself a fan of the sport.  And, no, I'm not a redneck.  [smiley=bandana.gif]

I'm sure F1 is much more sophisticated...I don't know much about it.  [smiley=shy.gif]

Hi Sean and welcome here.  We are getting to know Terinth quite well and she been a welcome addition.  Glad to meet you and hope you continue writing here.  My fiance and I are like you and Terinth in that we are still the hand holding, cuddling just to be with each other couple and people can't believe after 3 years.  So I get that part.   :)

Yes, let me just clarify that when I said our relationship is better than most people that we know, I meant people we know in our neighborhood, not people on this forum :)

I've watched motorsport since I was six years old, and although I appreciate the skill involved in handling a stock car, it shouldn't be considered world class.  The CART series always had some great talent in it though.  Errr... anyways, enough of motorsports already :D  I gotta be careful because once I start on motorsport, I go off on a tangent.  Just ask Heather :)

Welcome to the group! I agree 100% about NASCAR but I do have to say the greatest racing for all time will be Rally Racing. High Speed, Little Traction, Cars screaming thru tight spaces not wide lanes and the best reason, drumroll please---> You can stand right next to the race and watch up close and personal. Just my opinion and I have been known to be wrong. :P

My Dad used to run quarter miles at the dragstrip near our house when I was a little girl, in his 67 Mustang fastback.  He had a whle room full of trophies, as he'd been racing since before he and my Mom were married.  So while some people get all nostalgic smelling their Mother's cooking, for me it's that combination of hot dogs, burnt rubber, gasoline, and stripped clutches that does it!  (Although the stripped clutch smell seems to be rapidly disappearing, now that they have those new shifters.)

And I agree with you about the TVs in Red Lobster.  It's not exactly a wild partyin' place to go.

Here's the mentality of the modern day NASCAR driver.  Jimmy Spencer, when asked about Toyota's forthcoming entry into the series as a manufacturer, said these kind words:

"They bombed Pearl Harbor, don't forget.  As long as it's good for the economy, I guess it's ok"

Welcome to the forums Sean, and best of luck with everything.  Thankfully that idiot from Nascar isn't representative of the majority of people.  I hate NASCAR personally, but driving cars really really fast, and legally!, is cool.  Sadly, they'll take that sound bite and transmit it all over the world as often as possible, and yet again we Americans will be percieved as being egalitarian buttholes with no regard for other nations :(
The search for my future ex-wife marches on...

Well, I date an American, so I know Americans aren't all that way inclined :)  So if I may briefly stoop to Spencer's level, let me say this about NASCAR drivers:

"They're pasty, overweight idiots with no talent.  As long as it's good for the economy, I guess it's ok"
