Buttermilk

I did a search on this and I found that apparently, it does exist here.  I trawled Waitrose and Sainsbury's looking for it and I couldn't find it.  I think I remember seen something called "butter milk" in the milk aisle of some supermarket or other but, for the life of me, I can't find it now.  Anyone know of a supermarket that carries it for sure?  If not, an alternative to buttermilk? TIA

Sainsburys does have it because we've bought it there.

Yep, I've seen it at Sainsbury's as well. Although, if I remember correctly, it's a bit "hidden". If you can't find it, try asking a shop assistant. Good luck! :D

I've bought it at Tesco before. It's sold with the cream.

Are you wanting to drink it or is it for a recipe?

If it's for a recipe, you can put lemon juice or vinegar in regular milk, let it set for a few minutes, and it mimics buttermilk.

i've seen it before in the UK but to other suggestions.

in a pinch i've used "curdled" milk.  i add 1 T white vineger to each cup of whole milk.  let it sit there for a few minutes and i'll get somewhat the same flavor.

also- i have powdered buttermilk i bring back from the US... handy.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Iam sure I saw somethign about adding lemon juice or vinager to sour the milk.  It works for baking but not for drinking, which is gross anyway  ;).

It is for an over fried chicken recipe so I suppose I could make do with soured milk.  Thanks all

You could use plain yogurt for that as well.

I found buttermilk in  Sainsbury's with the cream.  but they don't carry a lot and it is hit and miss as to whether they will have it at my Sainsbury's.  It is in a small container and is the consistency of thick cream.  I dilute it with 1 part milk to one part buttermilk.

it is in an small narrow tub with the creme fraiche, sour cream and cream.  It's the same size as cream which if you are used to milk jugs of it, might be what's throwing you off.  All three of our local larger places sell it.  Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose.  In Sainsbury's it's a blue and white tub (see image)

A great sub for it is actually thick greek yogurt.  Works lovley in my oven fried chicken strip reicpe by Paula Dean.  (Over on the Food TV website.)

Also you can soak the chicken overnight in the buttermilk or plain yogurt with added spices and it makes the chicken to die for. :-)

Promise.

Plus most buttermilk here is cultured.  you'd have to know a farmer or be near a dairy to get the honest to god real stuff, but I think that's even in the USA.   Still works in all my recipes.

I use it for pancakes all the time.... hmmm... pancakes...

They also have buttermilk at Morrisons. Its near the cream fraiche, milk, ready-made pastry, etc..Its in a small container. I use it when I make cornbread.

I finally found it at ASDA.  The other Sainsbury's I went to didn't have it that day.
