Good place to buy cookware and kitchen miscellany?
« on: October 23, 2006, 11:36:05 AM »
I'm looking for a place that sells high quality pots, pans, cookware and other fun kitchen stuff.  Something like a Williams Sonoma?  Any recommendations for online stores or shops in London?

I originally intended to buy some of this stuff cheaply at Ikea but it's mostly crap, which I found out much to my dismay this weekend when I spent 4 hours making an elaborate grapefruit caramel meringue pie and it LEAKED out of the bottom of the springform pan.  It was very frustrating.  Don't want to repeat that!

Lakeland Ltd. is good for miscellaneous kitchen stuff.  As for pots and pans, you'll probably be best looking at department stores.  We bought ours from Fenwick, for example -- they have a very good kitchen department.

I find the UK has a ton of lovely small (and some not so small) specialist shops that sell really beautiful kitchenware. I've never been at a loss to find what I want. Lakeland is great for gadgets and basic stuff, but if you want anything a bit more special, I'd just look in your Yellow Pages for a kitchenware shop near you.

Le Creuset is very good for pots and pans. But it is pretty expensive.  You can get them in Debehams, John Lewis, House of Fraser.  Those are good places to look for other quality stuff as well.  There are kitchen shops around.  But when you are looking for them they never can be found.  I usually find them at outlet centres.

There is (or used to be it is probably about 3 years since I actually went to it) a brilliant shop on Camden High St, near the Worlds End corner.  They sell loads of kitchen gadgetry and bits and pieces and it's quite cheap.  Not sure of the name of it but it isn't part of a chain or anything, and isn't a very fancy looking place. Can't vouch for their pots and pans but I recently bought a set of 3 excellent stainless steel saucepans from Wilko very cheaply.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
