National Insurance Number question
« on: October 26, 2006, 08:17:35 PM »
I don't where to ask this question... anyway my husband is the Brit, and  he works full time. I do not have a NI number yet but I am eligible to work and have ILR. I just wondered if I should go ahead and apply for one, even though I intend to be a SAHM for quite some time?

What I am wondering about is 30 years down the line; do I need to get my NI number now, and will I get a pittance government pension even though I've not contributed credits by working?

I would get one if you can. As you have ILR you are eligible to apply for tax credits as a couple and you will need one for that.  I know people have trouble getting one if they're not working but if you call Inland Revenue and say you want to apply for tax credits but don't have an NI numbver yet they will help you.

OK, thanks! I think we are eligible for the Child Tax Credit. I'll get on it as soon as we arrive (Dec. 22).
