A Question Regarding Loans
« on: November 03, 2006, 04:07:41 PM »
I have a question and need some ammunition to try and deter a friend of mine from doing something that I think will screw him up in the future.

He's currently living in London, but he's going back to New York in March. However, he is planning on taking out several loans in the United Kingdom and pretty much taking the money and running with it. I've told him it's a bad idea because I'm sure that somehow, he will get in trouble regardless of country. So I need some ammunition, like I said before, maybe some websites that could scare him out of it, etc. I'd be really appreciative. Thanks!

Forming an intention to take money and not repay it sounds like theft to me.  Consequently he could be extradited to the UK should the lenders involve the police.  a criminal record does not sound smart to me.

In addition you should be aware that Experian - the world's largest credit referene agency - is headquartered in the States.  Consequently serious credit issues may bite back home jus when he wants credit in a few months or years time...

His debt will be sold to a debt-recovery agency (read: nasty people) who will, in turn, sell the debt to one of their counterpart agencies in the country he runs to.  His debt will have increased considerably, and he'll have to deal with the prospect of very large men knocking on his door and taking whatever he's got, and selling it for peanuts to cover just a fraction of what he owes.  He may think he's gotten off scott-free, but it could be years down the line before they catch up with him - they WILL catch up with him!
