Where go for the dentist?
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:55:53 PM »
Hi guys!

I am looking for an advice: where to go for THE good dentist if Central London or Kingston areas easily reachable to me (insurance/cost is irrelevant) ?

Actually, I had VERY good dentists in Boston and NY a few years ago, and now thinking about alternatives: to go back to Boston for my dentist visit, or go to Zurich (known for such good service), or try to find the one here, in UK. I've heard, English dentistry is not the best thing on this side of the pond. What would you say?

Thank you in advance,
- Michael_P ???

I would say RUBBISH! I have had tons of work done here including some cosmetic work. I frequent the dentist every three months for a polish and scale. Never had a problem at all and I feel very comfortable going. There's a few threads dedicated to this topic. Have a search Michael. Good luck and welcome to UKY.  ;D

I agree with Pebbles. English dentistry rightfully had a terrible reputation once upon a time, but things have changed a lot. You have nothing to worry about. As for finding a dentist, I'd just ask people you know (co-workers, etc.) for recommendations.

I have a great dentist here in Plymouth that rivals any US dentist for cleanliness, effectiveness and efficiency.

Meavy Way Dental Practice
01752 773412
45 Crownhill Road, Plymouth, PL5 3AL

It's closer than Boston and Zurich!  ;)

I am sure you can find a good one in London though.  Ask around and in particular people with nice teeth.  It's what we did and have a great place as a result.  Just remember that you might need two appointments.  One with the dentist to check things out and if you need a scaling or something more in depth you might be sent later to the Hygenist.  We always book the Hygenist a week or two later as he is very popular and hard to get to see.

Luckily we just needed a quick polish and clean this time.  We go every six months.  Cost is about £35 for the dentist.  You can go NHS (free at point of delivery) if you can find one in your area.

Dentistry over here is fine! Just like in the states they will vary. I will admit that I was a bit worried when I first moved over and put it off for too long but the practice that I used to go to was really professional and cutting edge. The problem was because it was quite posh the prices were OTT. I am about about to make an appointment at another office in our new area, I checked out their website and it looks spot on...I have no worries about dentistry over here.
