linen wedding dresses?
« on: November 15, 2006, 11:53:37 AM »
not only am i broody at the moment but i'm also weddiny (is that a word).

would like to get ducks in a row so that we do decide to get married, i can get off to a running start...

would like a linen wedding dress. thinking of outdoor bbq (in NJ, USA)... tea length or knee length.  informal... any ideas where to start looking for this type of dress (us or uk suggestions welcome).  would i be better off getting a pattern and having it made for me?

J Crew has a really pretty linen dress on sale right now. They only have limited sizes but the style is pretty and a bit more wedding-y and could probably be recreated by a seamstress.

Totally understand the weddingy feeling. I'm in the same boat right now :)

i was at monsoon over the weekend... they have a lovely blue patterned dress- interesting neckline.  their wedding dresses are nice but not quite what i'm looking for...

i'm glad i'm not alone- i'm not dying to get married here.  i'm secure in my relationship.  but other aspects of my life (career) are uncertain.  therefore i want security in other things...

the jcrew dress.... amazing.  a bit too low cut in the front but that could be easily modified.  all those dresses are at amazing prices!

I had a thing about getting married in a natural fibre wedding dress.  I  saw a gorgeous cotton Laura Ashley dress in a wedding mag that became my ideal.  I eventually had one made - peachy cotton with white lace trim.  It wound up being the most beautiful, simple dress and so comfortable to wear.

that sounds lovely mrspink.  did you go to a seamstress with the pic and say "i want this?" or did you bring a pattern to her?

simplicity is beautiful.

I went with the picture of the dress to a specialty fabric store and they helped me pick the pattern and the fabric.  Several of the shop workers were seamstresses on the side so one made it up for me.  She did an awesome job!

I had this thing about white dresses.  I refused to get married in white because I would have looked totally washed out in all the pictures.  So there was no way I was going to find what I was looking for in a shop.

I'm sure that you could get a good recommendation for a seamstress from a specialty fabric shop.

Seayoung Vu does some great modern pieces:

Also, I love Reva Mivasagar.  They incorporate non-traditional fabrics into their pieces.  I love this, but it will cost a fortune!

Waters is an excellent source. However, I think they stick to mostly satins and chiffons.

Another fabric you might like is silk gazar.  It's like organza, but a bit more matte and opaque.
