Housing Wish List if Money is No Object
« on: November 19, 2006, 07:46:01 PM »
If you have a housing budget of $7,000-10,000 pounds a month, which area would be your ideal place to live in central london?

Also, what would this budget get you in terms of footage, # bedrooms, outdoor space (i.e. garden, balconies, etc.), # bathrooms, convenient access to public transportation, and overall quality of life (restaurants, cafes, sport facilities, schools, etc.)?

Have you looked at rightmove.co.uk? You can get an idea from that of what you get for your money.  If you're looking at central London, search for postcodes W1, SW1, W2, W8, NW1, NW8, SW3, WC1, WC2, N1.

hiya!

Britwife's given you a good listing there! and if you're prepared to look around, a 'housing budget' of 7-10 grand a month will allow you to live like royalty !

As an aside, I was thumbing through my local Property News weekly paper and seeing whats on the market and for how much and researching how much my current rental apartment is worth (looks like I'm up £5 grand!)

Generally, the UK property market doesn't quote Sqaure footage - but I came across an agents section who do provide SQ FT info and laughing at how 'little' it is!

ex. 3 bedroom house, nicely decorated, must see blah blah around Warfield I think it was with 984 Sq FT !! for £550,000 ! I've seen 1 bed and 2 bed rental apartments in around Disney with more SQ FT than that for $95,000 (£50,000)

A brand new build in my town in a new estate close to the M4 and heathrow, went to have a look at a 3 bedroom townhouse, whilst very nice and new and choice of carpet and fittings and all that, it was 769 Sq FT! the 3rd 'bedroom' I'm NOT joking would NOT fit even a single bed! I reckon it was about 6x5 feet max! I said to the agent, whos this 'Bedroom' for? the dog?! she kinda laughed and quickly wanted us to see the en suite in the 'master bedroom' ! that was priced at £250,000 !

Be prepared for small property!

As for the rest of your post, go check out 'upmystreet.com (or .co.uk) which gives you alot of info for the area you key in

cheers!

By the way, have you considered using a relocation agent? We are using one to help with our move up to Scotland and she has been a real help to us. As well as finding you suitable housing, they can advise you about schools, and all the other things you need to know. I don't have any links for you on that but a Google search should turn some up.

several american colleagues of my husbands live in st johns wood, with children at the american school. one lived first in a 4 bedroom townhouse with no yard for £2000 per week, then they moved to another 4 bed apartment for £2300 per week. These were nice places by American standards but definitely not grand, and those rentals took place 3 plus years ago.  You may now struggle to find a large place with a yard / garden for less than £3000, according to expats living in the area.

That may very well be true especially with the incredibly tight letting market...in talking with our relocation agent throughout our process, she said that her absolute nightmare budget was 2000 ppw.  You expect a lot for the amount of money you're spending but often what's available doesn't meet those expectations.

A utility room!  A real one, w/the dryer right next to the washer, a double Belfast sink for handwashing, a wooden rack on the ceiling, a built in ironing board, and a chest freezer.

And a sewing/crafts room.

And a playroom.

And a kitchen you can turn round in.
