Splenda?
« on: January 19, 2007, 02:02:01 PM »
Quick question...

Is Splenda widely available in the UK?  I can't remember seeing it last time I was there (November), at least not in restaurants.  I did do a bit of grocery shopping, but it was mostly at the Tesco Express down the road from my friend's flat.  Maybe there weren't as many products as there would be at a full-size store?

Thanks!

I'm a bit irritated about Splenda at our Tesco right now. I've always bought the glass jars for £1.99 at Tesco but for the past few months our Tesco stopped stocking the glass jars and only offers the yellow box for £3.20!!!! I tried using other sugar subs but dont like any of them so Im stuck buying the yellow box for £3.20.   :-\\\\

I've seen Splenda at every supermarket I've been to.  I don't eat sugar so Splenda is all I use for cooking, baking, etc. I do like the glass jars better but I haven't seen them in a while.

Asda only do the little yellow boxes now as well.  I think they're 2 for £4.  I do miss those glass jars, though!  >:(

Re: Splenda? BAD FOR YOU!!

Sorry to rain on ya'lls Splenda parade but plenda is REALLY bad for you!! I try to avoid it as much as I can.  The public has been mislead that it is a natural product when it is anything BUT.
There are loads of sites dedicated to educating on how bad it is..this is a good one:

http://www.truthaboutsplenda.com/

From the site:
"The finished product contains no elements of natural sugar. It is made in a chemical plant, not in a sugar cane or beet field. Splenda is a highly processed chemical. Despite advertisements stating “Made from Sugar so it Tastes like Sugar”, which attempt to confuse consumers, Splenda is not natural."

"In the case of Splenda, we simply don’t know for certain what long-term consumption of this substance can do to people over their lifetimes. Some health professionals have expressed concern that Splenda may put the health of people who consume it at risk. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reviewed possible side-effects from consuming Splenda, including enlarged liver and kidneys, decreased white blood cell count, reduced growth rate and decreased fetal body weight."

I use Stevia plus as a sweetener instead, its a little bit sweeter than sugar but totally natural and actually quite good for you. You can cook with Stevia as well. A little more expensive but in my opinion worth it. I've always been paranoid about chemicals etc in food..

no rain on my parade... I knew Splenda was a processed chemical and not very healthy, but for all of the unhealthy things I have done in my life, Splenda isn't so bad and one of the very few unhealthy things I consume.

Yeah we all have our vices...i stopped using spelenda and use eqal. That's bad too!!!

Things like Quorn aren't that great for you either. But sometimes we need substituties!

I love sugar, the only reason I don't use it anymore is because I went on WW over 2 years ago and it just had too many calories.  I tried different substitutes but I couldn't find anything besides Splenda that I liked so I stuck with it.  I know Diet Pepsi is not good for me either but hey, you gotta choose what's more important to you.  I'll take low calorie products, thanks.

The thing for me is that there hasnt been enough testing on Splenda to determine it's long term effects, it could be much worse than Equal or Sweet n Low even. It's in everything these days and a majority of people are consuming it believing its safe and natural etc. due to misleading advertising.

If you know its potentially bad for you and consume it anyways, well that's your choice. I consume plenty of things that are considered bad for me. Cause yeah we all have our vices!!

I'm telling ya though Stevia Plus as a substitute is the way to go if you can find it! Its becoming more and more popular as a sugar substitute over here in the U.S. and is 100% natural, hopefully you can find it easily in the U.K as well.
