Wedding Venues...Scotland

Anyone know of any lovely wedding venues in Scotland?  Preferrably central Scotland.  We've got a list of a bunch of possibilities, but just thought I'd post it here to see if anyone had some uniques suggestions we hadn't thought of.  It would be great if anyone could suggest some nice small churches, etc.  Thanks.

Arthur and I got married at Gretna Green. Not really central Scotland but still Scotland.

We did the elope thing which was absolutely perfect for us.   We didn't want a big to-do especially as the nightmare of which continent was too much to handle plus we wanted something a bit different from going to a registry office. One of these days I'll get around to putting up our pics.  

While Gretna's history is more of the runaway bride type, the place is really lovely and it's unique. If you're doing a small wedding with minimal guests, I'm sure they can accommodate that too. We just had a couple tourists who were checking out the place for their wedding as our witnesses (they decided afterwards it was the perfect place for them!) and told our friends and family about it later.

I've lived in Linlithgow for 2 years and have never visited the Palace (where Mary Queen of Scots was born) until last weekend, when we had visitors through from Glasgow.

When we got there, there was a wedding party having their photos done in the bright sunshine and these gorgeous ruins of a Palace built in 1424!  The guys were all in kilts and looked smashin.  The bride had an ivory gown, but also a claret-coloured long velvet cloak which was really lovely.  It must have been 'themed' this way, because even all the guests were colour coordinated in claret/maroon/wine and white or black!  

I thought it was only the photos they were doing, but the man in charge told us they'd actually got married there, and showed us the stone chamber all decked out with seats, heating, lights, flowers, etc where the ceremony was actually done.

Me and Snupy went to Edinburgh for the New Year this year to get the full 'Hogmanay Experience'!  ~ Yes, that's right the year it was a total washout with wind and rain causing street parties and the world famous firework display from Edinburgh Castle to be cancelled!  [smiley=sad2.gif]

However, we did visit the Castle and followed the tour guide to hear the history of the place.  The male guide wore the full Scots gear and cracked all the expected jokes about there being nothing worn uder the kilt (~ It's all in perfect working order, etc, etc!).  One small problem was that Snupy found it quite difficult to understand what the Guide was saying in his broad Scots accent, so I was having to translate for her!

Anyway back to the point of the thread ~ The Guide said that a recent change has meant that although previously only members of, I believe, the royal family or a Scots Military Regiment could be wed at Edinburgh Castle, now any one can. I believe he said that it costs around £400 for the privilege, which he quipped, "As the men amongst you will think is a small price to pay for a life time of misery!" ~ I don't think I dared translate that bit for Snupy ~ Just in case I became the first person to be executed at the Castle for over a century!

Wow,  how beautiful!  And I agree with Beth about the Sean Connery thing!  

That is a really pretty church and not that far away from where we're at (at least by American standards of distance..hehehe).  We've decided on a nice wedding with family and friends here in the US and a nice but small one at his local parish in Scotland.  This weekend was successful in ways of planning and we're getting close to picking dates...woohoo.  Makes you all happy.

That sounds great, Krissybelle! Even though our wedding here in Scotland was just about perfect, I did really miss my friends and family that were not able to make it over. Having a ceremony in both places is a brilliant idea if you can make it happen! Good luck with the planning.

Hehe...all my friends used to call my dad 'Sean' back in highschool. He's even had women come up to him and demand that he 'speaks like Sean Connery' to them!
