cake in a jar?? Help!

My hubby is US Military, and on a support forum some of the ladies were talking about sending a cake in a jar in their care packages, sounds like a great idea. I want to do this, but not sure what Jars to use which are the UK equivalent, would Jam Jars do, and if so where can i buy them, with the lids to seal them properly??

But just wondering if anyone has done this, or stores food this way and could give me any tips, advice, or point me in the right direction as to where i can buy the jars and lids here in the UK.

Are you living in the UK?  Do you not have access to a US military shopping facility?  If so you can get the jars there.  I would highly recommend Ball/Mason canning jars.  You need the pint size wide mouth.  I would not use any "used" jelly jars or any other jars that have already had something in them.  It is best to use new jars.  I have done this many times but only in the US where I had access to the jars that are recommended.  And yes it is a great idea for sending deployed hubby's cake.  While mine was deployed during the 1st gulf war, I was living in Germany and my german neighbor made a cake that we sent to my hubby.  It was a pound cake with rum in it and the longer it sat - the better it got.  So since it was taking 3-6 weeks for things to get through, the cake was perfect by the time it got to him.  We just sealed it well in plastic wrap and ziploc bags.  So that's another idea -don't have the recipe to share with you, but perhaps you can find one on the internet.  Good luck with your baking and best wishes to you while he is deployed!

None of the kitchen stores here dont have the wide mouth Jars so the cakes can just slide out. But i just found a place on ebay that has a few that may do the job.
