Certificate of Approval
« on: February 14, 2007, 07:54:48 PM »
I didn't find a thread about this, which is surprising to me because it seems that it would be something that a lot of us would have to deal with.  If I just missed it (maybe it's in a different forum?), please just direct me to the right place.

I don't have much in the way of specific questions because I don't know enough to have informed questions.  Anyone with a limited-time visa has to get one, correct?  What are the best sources for information on how to apply for one?

I'd also love to hear about the experiences other people have had applying for CoAs, especially how long it took to get it and whether there were any problems.

Thanks!

Most here probably don't need one, as they have come over on fiancee visas or married overseas, or were here before COA's existed.

But yes, if you are in the UK on a limited visa, such as work permit, HSMP, student, then you need a COA before you can give notice at the register office.  The exception to this is if you are getting married in the Church of England.

Basically, they are very straight forward.

http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/6353/11406/coaleaflet.pdf guidance if you have less than three months on your current visa

http://www.ind.homeoffice.gov.uk/applying/generalcaseworking/marriageorregisteringcivilpartne general guidance on marrying in the UK.

Perhaps this is worthy of a sticky in the immigration section?

This would also include FLR/FLE as an unmarried partner, right?

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12
