houmous vs hummus
« on: February 15, 2007, 05:24:22 PM »
Okay. I am moving back to the UK and its like I want to bring a lifetime supply of hummus with me. I noticed that most the places in the UK dont have Olive Oil based Houmous. Its really just full of junk and so much higher in fat. Has anyone seen just a natural houmous brand?

Not sure, but if you pick up a little food processor and a bottle of tahini at a health food store (couldn't find it at the supermarket) you could whip up your own in a couple of minutes.  That's what we've been doing.

There are tons of different types of houmous available in the UK in the salad or ready meal sections.  There are those with olive oil and without and low fat versions and a plethora of other varieties.  It's like the USA.. you have to pick up the containers and read the ingredients.  If none of those is to your satisfaction I heartly recommend making your own.  Tahini is readily available in the Health Food section (usually with all the Gluten Free stuff).  A dash of Tahini, some chickpeas (garbanzos), olive oil, lemon, some garlic cloves and   all to your very own personalized taste.  So no need for that lifetime supply. :-)

Aye I noticed the sainsburys, tesco and even the M&S brands arent made with olive oil. Personally I see.. sunflower oil not up to scratch. I have yet to see other brands in those stories but will try and keep my eye out.

I've bought olive oil based hummus from ASDA before.

Not as good as Whole Food's but easier than making my own!

There is a Whole Foods opening in London.  Don't know when, don't know where, but it's on the Street Sensation website.

Fresh 'n' Wild was bought by Whole Foods a couple of years ago, so any new F&W shops in the UK will be named Whole Foods.

I never hear about Lov ebased Houmous .. I know Hummus or hummus bi tahini below..

Hummus is often garnished with parsley, paprika, pine nuts, tomatoes, cucumber, thinly-sliced onions, mushrooms, or more chickpeas, and then drizzled with olive oil before serving.
Not sure about your questions ?

You can eat Hummus with Baba ghanoush..
baba ganoush is a sort of salad made of grilled eggplant with finely diced onions, tomatoes and other vegetables blended in. It is normally served with a dressing of oil and pomegranate concentrate.

I will not buy from Sainsburys.. Try some local Middle eastern stores in your area if you are looking for a good Hummus or Tahini..

I can't believe there's a salmonella scare! I was just reading about a salmonella recall in peanut butter in america. What on earth is going on with our food supply! It's just scary
