New windows...
« on: February 24, 2007, 08:05:58 AM »
We'll need to get new windows for our flat within the next year, so we've been checking around to see which company we should go with.

Our neighbours just went with Weatherseal (anyone ever heard of it?) and for a one bedroom flat they are paying 9,000.00!!

I cannot believe this and am feeling sick over the thought of having to pay anywhere near this (we have two bedrooms).  Weatherseal did come cold calling, so I was a bit weary if they were legit anyway.

Anyone get new windows in their home? How much did you pay?

My two cents - avoid Weatherseal like the plague! I went through a couple of months of hell with them, finally getting what I'd paid for but only after countless phone calls and letters. Their customer care is non-existent. I occasionally get sales calls from them now (cold calls) and I just tell them I want absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with them.

£9000?? No way!   :o We had a 10x11 conservatory put in for just over £10,000 by a local double glazing shop who also installed our new front door! Shop around . There's lots of places to choose from and it's very competitive!

Thanks..I think I'm going to shop around.  We were thinking more along the lines of £2,500 for new windows, so hearing our neighbour paid £9,000 was quite the shock!

Ricki,  Can you find out who did your neighbors? We're putting all new windows in our new place and were quoted around 15,000 I'd love to find someone cheaper.

I think they used Safestyle. We used Kiwi. But remember we are just terraced houses so just windows in the front and back. None on the sides. Kiwi did our conservatory.Very honest and reasonable!

Have you got the Sunday Mail today?
The 'Right At Home' (or whatever its called!) magazine always has adverts at the back for double glazing...

Avoid ads in the nationals, they have to pay for them somehow so they'll be charging you. Try a few local double glazing manufacturers, there's about 10 such places within 10 mins of my home. Shop around, depending on how many windows there are, you should get a good price.

oh yes... im not suggesting she go with any of them, but she should look at the adverts purely to get an idea of price.  :)

My mum has had her windows done recently by Anglian. She got three quotes, these were the cheapest and it was a great job, with great after sales care and efficient workmen.

Hi,

Important thing is to shop around for quotes that are based on someone viewing your actual windows, their sizing and any potential issues/fitting concerns etc.

there's too many people who quote over the phone, you get happy and then when you want to go ahead, they increase the price etc.

I had crazy variations for the conservatory we made early 06 - varied from around £5500 supplied & Fitted to well over £14,000!! B&Q came in at £12,000!

We went with a local independant supplier and although there were some worrying issues for us on completion time, we had a brilliant conservatory for around £7800 with every last detail finished.

Another similar type of place came out to quote us on replacement windows in white uPVC and for 5 windows (one of which is a tricky square not rounded bay) we were quoted around the £1800 all fitted.

There's plenty around here, I'm not sure where you are though!

hope this helps

I just had a quote from Weatherseal and after 1 1/2 hours, and the price going down by more than half, I had to basically kick him out.

I just wanted the quote, but he made the whole speech, etc..  Thought I was nuts for wanting to pay cash (I think they make their money from finance) and just really pissed me off.

I told them I'd want to check out two other companies and think about it before I made my desicion, which did not impress the salesman.

VERY pressuring sales pitch.  I can't imagine what older, more "pushable" people must feel like when dealing with this.

I almost want to call watchdog.

Yes...sounds like a good idea! Keep getting more quotes.

I remember when we first moved into our house, I called Hillary Blinds and a guy came over and I got a quote for two Roman blinds and one wooden blind.....total over £400 (installation included)....well I would hope so! This is a small terraced house so you can imagine the size of the windows.  ::) Of course I played it cool but I wanted to say WTF, are you kidding me?  Oh, if only someone tried to pull that on me in the states (I try to be a bit more pleasant over here). What a waste of time for all involved. I guess they hope for one sucker out of ten??
