If not garage sale, then what? Boot or jumble sale?
« on: March 26, 2007, 09:29:24 AM »
We are moving to the U.S. and don't know how to sell home items outside of ebay.  We've done all we can with ebay, now we want to have a garage sale but it seems that just isn't done here.

Our local paper will advert items under£250 for free.  Should we advert one by one there?  Or can we advertise a boot sale but just for our house (the items would be in the garage anyway so maybe not)?

Help! :)

Can you not get to a car boot sale? That's what we ended up doing when we moved house last year. I'm not sure you'll get anyone thru your door. Garage sales just aren't the done thing here and many people would feel uncomfortable with the idea. I'd make an effort to get to a car boot sale and then use your paper.

Also, for things you can't manage to sell but know could be of use, try Freecycle.

Also, for big things you might the Free Advertiser (or whatever it's called) - that little weekly listing of stuff for sale. People tend to sell cars, appliances, etc. through that. You can find it with the newspapers at any Spar shop, petrol station, etc.

Edited because I remembered the name of the publication: AdTrader.

Thanks!  I know nothing about getting to a boot sale.  Does one have to ask them first if one can attend?

Is this an example of where I'd find boot/jumble sales?

That indoor car boot sale looks about right. Give them a ring, but usually you just show up, pay a small fee, and set up your table. Have plenty of change on hand and you might want to go to one ahead of time to see how people price things. Most towns have large outdoor ones throughout the summer if not the whole year so look out for those, too.

Thanks very much.  Wish we could be here by summer...moving in less than a month's time (sob!)

I really appreciate the help.
