Making corn tortillas
« on: March 26, 2007, 02:01:09 PM »
I have recently made corn tortillas a couple of times. We have a tortilla press but even with that they are still coming out a bit thick, does anyone have any tips to make them thinner? Should I put more water in the masa to make it more elastic?

Thanks

A little more water should help (but not too much!).  Although, try using less of the batter when pouring onto the press and when you press them, that should make them a little thinner.

I press the tortillas between two pieces of cling film or paper.. then to flatten them a bit more I actually use a rolling pin.... a bit time consuming but the press helps make them evenly flat and round whereas if I use just a rolling pin they can come out in any shape!

Thanks Pam! Yeah I was thinking I might have to finish them off with a rolling pin next time ... but it takes so long already ... took me over an hour yesterday to press and cook 20.

Ok thanks I'll try that too, but I'm making more of a dough than a batter ... am I doing it wrong?

Or you could just make them very thick and cook arepas!
