Inexpensive wine recommendations?
« on: March 30, 2007, 08:45:25 PM »
I am planning an event for work and we are doing the wine ourselves.  I need to order the wine in the coming week, but have no idea what to get.  I need a couple cases of red and a couple cases of white.  Preferably under £6 a bottle.  They don't need to be fabulous wines, but I'd hate to pick out something awful.

Any suggestions?  Also, I was just going to order from Sainsbury's, but if anyone has a better suggestion please let me know.

Thanks!   ;D

I have looked at several wine delivery options in the past and Sainsbury's seems to ok with their selection. For an inexpensive red wine try the Spanish "Campo Viejo Crianza 2004 Rioja".

Very warm, smooth and velvety. I think for an inexpensive wine it is very nice.

Anything under the Montana label from New Zealand is very good. I especially like their Sauvignon Blanc.

Mmmm, New Zealand whites....

If I wasn't so hung over I'd be drooling at the thought  :P

I'd suggest checking out a wine merchant, they usually do good deals on cases of wine and may throw in glasses for free (minus breakages).

Most Wolf Blass wines are pretty drinkable and in your price range. I just picked up a Shiraz Cabernet at Sainsburys the other day and it wasn't bad at all.

If you have a Threshers in your area they do a permanent 3 for 2 offer so you can buy slightly more expensive/nicer stuff for less....

Thanks so much for the great recommendations.   :)

We have glasses already, so that shouldn't be a problem (and I just found out that by borrowing them from a different department I don't have to wash them all by hand!).

One more question - I'm going to be ordering 3 6-bottle cases.  Would you order 2 red and 1 white, or the other way around?  It will mostly be 35-60 year old men drinking, if that makes a difference.

Most men that I know of in that age group prefer red.

If you can get it on offer from Tescos - the Evolution Merlot from South Africa is delicious.

For a Riesling from Marks and Spencers

Tescos have on offer at the momen Rawnsley Estate wines.  I bought a truck load of the Chardonnay. It's on offer for £4.99 usually £10.  Wolf Blass I think is on sale too.

I bought 2 cases of Wolf Blass Yellow Label Shiraz and 1 case of Wolf Blass Chardonnay Semillon.  And I won't even taste them to see how they are...  :(
