Any suggestions/comments on Manchester
« on: February 24, 2004, 06:57:29 PM »
I just got back from another trip over. So short. 4 days, it gets more and more difficult to leave him at the airport, but I can honestly say, I felt pretty good about this visit. I am so lucky to have met him, and now more than ever I am sure about making this move...
Although, we didn't even go to Manchester! Spent the weekend in Padstow. It was very relaxing and romantic. BUT I am moving over this fall, and haven't even been there!
Does anyone out there reside in this lovely city? Any pointers on how to meet people? I think that is what concerns me most. Just not having a network of friends.
It looks like a work visa is going to happen...nice to have a boyfriend who can pull a few strings. Keeping my finger crossed, but if this comes thru, I won't feel the pressure of being that dependant girl.
I guess more than anything, I was hoping there were some Americans out there living in Manchester.

I don't *live* in Manchester, but I went there once on a business trip.  Does that count?   :)

Actually, I didn't see much of it really....the train station was a bit icky, but maybe I was just there at a bad time.  Otherwise, seemed like a pretty okay city if a bit aged....I think it peaked back in the 60's or 70's when it was full of trendy clubs and happenin' joints.  But I'm definitely not an expert on the place.  :)

By the way, if you're planning on moving here and *not* being dependent on someone else, you may as well just go insane now.  You may have a job when you get here, but as for the things in life that actually make you feel like an adult, you're gonna be mighty dependent on your partner.  There's cooking, crossing the street, learning how to write a cheque....it'll all be new!  :)

Just thought I'd warn you ahead of time.   ;D

Wishstar,
You are probably right about the whole dependancy thing, I guess if I have a job I will feel less stress about being a complete burden on him! :)

I visited Manchester once and loved it. Figured if I was moving with a clean slate, it would be one area I'd consider relocating to. Very up and coming, very cultural. I think it would be especially great for the mid-20-something to 30-something.
Married to Graham, we run our own open-source computer training company in beautiful Wiltshire out of our 1814 Georgian Regency home (a former lodging house and once featured in Antiques Roadshow)
