Name differences in food...any suggestions will help!
« on: April 06, 2007, 06:03:40 AM »
So I thought a cute/fun thing to do for my wedding reception later this year would be to have some food that has different names in the US/UK, with little cards that say something like "Bride calls it:.... Groom Calls it:..." on them.  (Bride=US, Groom=UK)

In order to do that, I need some ideas...which is why I'm in the food board!  The only things I can think of right now are:

Bride: Jell-o
Groom:  Jelly

Bride:  Cookies
Groom:  Biscuits

Bride:  Fries
Groom:  Chips

...pretty generic stuff and not terribly wedding reception-ish.

Any suggestions on foods that have different names would be helpful!  Thanks!!!

corn starch = corn flour
ham = gammon
graham cracker = digestives
molasses = treacle
rutabaga = swede
shrimp = prawns
raisins = sultanas

and of course you would have to have on display a can of "Spotted Dick" which is a pudding with currants  ::) ;D

Again from the same book. Not all British people use these terms but some do!

Bride - fish sticks
Groom - fish fingers

Bride - Frosting
Groom- icing

Bride - green onions
Groom - spring onions

Bride - Hamburger
Groom- Beefburger

Bride - Napkins
Groom - Serviettes

Bride - crepe
Groom - pancake

Bride- saran wrap
Groom - cling film

Bride - popsicles
Groom - Ice lollies

Bride - Golden or white raisins
Groom - Sultanas

Bride - confectioner's sugar
Groom - icing sugar

If you are moving over here, I would highly reccommend this cookbook to start with.  It was my lifesaver! It's by Delora Jones and has not just the differences in foods but measurements, different cuts of meats, some recipes, substitutions, etc.

haha, this is awesome guys.  It makes me want to do something odd like stick post-it notes on anything and everything I can there with the names, like learning a new language  :P

and of course you would have to have on display a can of "Spotted Dick" which is a pudding with currants  ::) ;D

We had that at christmas when I was there, and I just could not stop laughing...it was kind of embarassing, because I was turning beet red at the dinner table, but his family just kind of chuckled and made fun of me for it  ;D
