Box Spring Mattresses
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:21:00 PM »
How come I can't find any box spring mattresses over here?  It seems that all beds only use a top mattress.  I have been here over 3 years and we have been through 3 different mattresses because I have a hard time with my back during the night.  I need that extra support underneath the top mattress but it seems they all just get laid on boards on the bed frame.  My dr/chiropractor in the states told me that it is essential to have a good quality mattress that isn't too firm or too soft. And if the mattress can fold or bend easily then it was time to throw it out. The thing is, I find they actually sell mattresses rolled up here!!  To me, that is a sheer sign to discard.  Does anyone know where I can find a box spring to put underneath our normal mattress?  Good quality mattresses are pretty expensive here and we haven't actually plopped the money down yet on one so that could be why we have been through about 3.  I keep waking up with severe headaches and backaches within the last month and I know are mattress is about done for.

Could you try buying a set with a sprung divan? When I was shopping last year, I couldn't find any boxsprings. http://www.dreams.co.uk/scripts/servlet.cgi?page_id=products/divans.html

After searching and sitting on what felt like loads, I ended up with an extra firm, high end mattress from Dreams that I love!

Good luck!

When I first moved over here we were in rented accommodation (my husband moved in about two weeks before me). I remember waking up one day and saying "oh my god, we are sleeping on a box spring". It was horrible so I looked closely and saw that it was in fact a mattress (new but crap, probably a roll up type like you mentioned). I ended up buying an egg foam mattress cover for it from the states and it was soo much better! When we bought our house we spent $450 for a mattress from Dreams (not OTT price wise) and its lovely, not too soft and not to firm (even though I prefer firm). I don't think that box springs are very popular over here, probably because you can't get them up most stairs and around corners so I wouldn't be to worried about having a box spring for support. Your best bet is to go to a bedding store and talk to a salesperson about your requirements.

That's the thing. DH and I really don't like divans.  We kind of find them tacky (sorry to anyone who has them).  I think it's because the first place we lived in that was rented had the divan beds as furnished and it wasn't exactly the nicest place but just somewhere to start. We both like the look of proper beds with headboads and footboards and space underneath (for the cats to hide! lol) We have a nice contemporary metal frame headboard and bedframe we like at the moment. We just want to get a good set of mattresses.

We have metal frame bed, (headboard/footboard), a bit OTT priced but we love it. No divan for us, I know what you mean. You can find a great mattress that will give you the support that you need (no box spring required) even with a metal frame.  :)
