Are Moving Costs Covered By Sponsoring Company
« on: April 18, 2007, 09:40:57 AM »
Hey folks,

As my first official question here, I'd love to know an answer to something that I have been wondering for a couple of months.

I am in the process of moving to the UK. I have a job offer from a computer consulting company and they are working on the work permit, which should (supposedly) be ready any day know.

When I worked through the interview process, I was told that moving costs would not be covered as this is just not typically done when companies hire folks that will require a move in or to the UK. Now, I am already way committed to this and all. But I was wondering how accurate that information was.

Am I getting stiffed or is that just generally the way things work?

Thanks for any experiences that you guys can share.

Each company differs, there is no hard and fast rule.

Yep it really depends on the company. Some pay all costs, some make a contribution, some nothing at all.  When we moved from the south east of England to Scotland my husband's company paid for our house removal costs but nothing else.

My company doesn't pay any costs of moving - just a one-way ticket to get over here.  I think it is different for everybody, but that's what's happening with me.  ::)

my company paid for my things to be transported via sea.  they have a 40ft container leaving from the US to the UK office every week.  they palleted up my stuff and it arrived 3 weeks later.  they also paid for a hotel for the first 3 weeks.  they also loaned me the money for my down payment on a flat- taken out of my 1st 3 paychecks.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

Thank you guys for the feedback.

I feel like the company is a good one, but you never REALLY know and it has been nagging at me that they were not willing to help with relocation, which would be the standard in the USA in my profession.

This feedback makes me feel a lot more confident that I am not being taken advantage of by the company that I am entrusting to sponsor my existence in the UK. :)
