LDR lead to a computer addiction?
« on: April 26, 2007, 01:04:19 AM »
DB and I have been chatting online for hours each day for the past year. I hate being attached to the computer and felt confined. This week DB started a new job and he's going to bed at midnight, since that's only 7pm for me and I'm used to him staying up until I go to bed at 11, I'm at a loss for what to do with myself. I used to rarely go on the computer but now that I don't have a reason to be on the computer all the time, I'm at a loss for what to do at home that doesn't involve being online!

I think I've found a side effect from LDR...computer addiction!!  :o   [smiley=bigcry.gif]

It definitely gets you in a habit, that is for sure. I was once in an LDR (though within the US) and we mainly connected through the internet. When we finally were together, we sort of were at a loss for what to do with ourselves for a while. Most of our time was previously spent emailing/IMing each other. We eventually readjusted, but it's kinda weird at first.

I would check the book club area here on UKY to see if anyone has made any good book recommendations. Also, trashy romance novels are way easy to read and always good for a chuckle (especially the regency period ones). Just a thought!

Books are good.  Take up a yoga class.  Join a gym.  Watch TV.  And I totally hear you about computer addiction!  I had to pull myself away and I felt so much better!
I am the architect of my destiny.

We have an 8 hour time difference so it's hard when it's late there and still really early here.  I feel bad because he stays up so late talking to me and doesn't get enough sleep before work.  But I'm taking four online classes so I definitely have something to keep me busy.  It's just not as fun.  :(

See, B.L. (Before Lee) I used to do all those things all the time, now I just haven't done them in so long, ti's like I can't remember how to do it! I'm find when we're visiting each other, I just go online for a little bit and then do all those other things. I just can't do it when we're apart for some reason.  :-\\\\

I used to be overly attatched to my computer when I was first getting to know DF. We don't talk nearly as much or as long as we used to, but that doesn't mean we've become detached from one another. He works 12 hour days at a factory, and I'm at school full time and work part time. We're just super busy and have our separate lives, so the time we do talk is spent catching up. I hated being so attached the computer and that caused a lot of problems in the past--we work much better when we're not constantly in contact, but that's just us. So like others have said, you just need to get yourself back into the swing of keeping yourself entertained, which is often easier said than done! I wonder what I'm going to do with myself when I'm done with school for good next week and have no job lined up, so I'll have little to distract myself with besides hunting for a temporary job.

Try to pick up some new hobbies, or find some friends in your town and ask for their input on what they do in the area and make plans to hang out somewhere outside the house, and get used to detaching yourself from the computer. But if you're ever at home alone and find yourself bored, the internet does offer plenty of entertaining online games, or free streaming videos, or downloadable PC games.

One good thing is that spring is arriving (depending on your area, I guess...I've seen snowstorms and 80 degree weather within the past two weeks here in Ohio  ;D) so you can plan more outdoor activities, which are always good for the spirit  :D
