NARIC Question
« on: April 30, 2007, 04:52:11 PM »
Hi, everyone. I'm having a bit of trouble navigating the NARIC website. I'm looking for information on the standard evaluation service to compare my US BAs and MA to British equivalents.

I think I found the service I need, but I'm confused about this quote:

Quote
We are only able to evaluate courses of at least 200 hours duration. Any certificates for courses of less than 200 hours will not be mentioned in the evaluation.

I'm not exactly sure what this means. 200 hours? In the US, we track our progress by credit hours, and even 4-years degrees don't average more than around 130 credit hours. Or are they referring to course level?

Here's the page I was looking at: http://www.naric.org.uk/index.asp?page=65&section=1

Any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

ah, there was a bit of confusion on that on an earlier thread many months ago...I don't think it was ever really resolved, though.  However I don't think they mean credit hours when they say 200 hours- but best thing to do is just write/call them and ask.

But just to note- in most cases it's not necessary to pay for a NARIC evaluation at all. A US BA is equivalent to a UK honours BA and a US MA is equivalent to the UK MA.  Pretty much all employers know this and will treat your qualifications accordingly.  (Now if you were specifically requested to have a NARIC evaluation for a certification or something, that's a different story.)
Now a triple citizen!

Student visa 9/06-->Int'l Grad Scheme 1/08-->FLR(M) 7/08-->ILR 6/10-->British citizenship 12/12

Okay, thanks. If I do find out what the issue is, I'll try to remember to post the answer.

I do have a few certificates and language proficiences attached to my degrees, and my university's International Studies advisor suggested a NARIC evalution. But you're right, it might not be worth it unless I'm looking at specialized fields, which is doubtful considering my area.

NARIC probably won't have comparisons for all the attached proficiencies.  But a degree is a degree (other than an Associates Degree, which is a lower standard).
