I got really excited because a new Mexican place just opened up in Inverness and I got my husband all excited about it too .... but it's closed down already - busted for selling alcohol without a licence!

A new place just opened in Oxford----The Mission located on St. Michael's just off Cornmarket.  It is a burrito bar and does a pretty good job.  choice of pinto beans or black beans, good guacamole.  My husband and I went to give it a try the first week it opened and it was full of Americans nostalgic for Mexican food.  The most Americans I have seen in one place since I've been in Oxford.  The owner spent some time in American doing "research," and it shows.  It would be nice to have fresh peppers to liven things up, even though there is good hot sauce.  Gail

well guess what? I went past it again today and it's reopened!! No idea what the food is like but the menu isn't too bad, they have various kinds of burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, flautas even as well as some non Mexican stuff.

Oil and Vinegar shops now have a range of Latin Americanproducts. There are various salsa including a salsa con queso and their own corn chips. Also a spice mix called "Yucatan Mix."

cool, I'll have to try that out!
there's an almost mexican hole in the wall in brighton - el taco which is pretty good, but I've been learning myself to rid the boy of his cravings, I now make pretty decent mexican chilli (no beans!!!) great flour tortillas, alright corn tortillas from masa harina and pretty great salsa and guacamole, I even made cheese enchiladas the other night using a range of cheeses to make  queso :)

Cafe El Paso is definitely good...dirty, but good.  I think I've been to every Mexican place in London now with the exception of Dog Star in Brixton and Wahaca in Covent Garden. I've written them all up on my blog too! Favorites are Mucho Mas on Upper Street nd Mercado in Stoke Newington.  http://kristainlondon.typepad.com/dining/mexican/index.html

Am just remembering that I haven't been to Mestizo in Hampstead yet either so forget what I said...there's still more Mexican to be had!
american girl likes food and london, but not cooking.

We did a UKY meetup at Wahaca last September (yummy!) and my British husband is in love with Mucho Mas. :D  Of course, his discerning palate really only stretches to burritos from Moe's. ;)

Tried to go to Wahaca tonight after SATC movie.  We called first and they said the wait was an hour and 45 minutes!  I guess that means it is good!  Will try mid week sometime.

For those of you trying your own refried beans at home, there is a fart-proof herb called epazote (you can get it through Cool Chile Co.) and although it adds nothing to the taste of the beans it diminishes, shall we say ... the flatulent factor involved.

If you want to eat lots of Mexican food, and have lots of presentations to make the next day, and you do not want to fart the next day, use epazote. (This works for refried beans with pintos and black beans, and also black beans de la olla).

Totally fart-proof.

Nuff said, Stu the Southern Californian.
It sure ain't cricket!

Yeah, but why wouldn't you want to share the love?  ;)
