Town/Village/City Suggestions
« on: May 16, 2007, 04:57:20 PM »
After speaking to a recruiter, it seems that positions in my career are mostly based out of Berkshire, Cambridgeshire, Oxford, various places in York (just a very few), and a few in Scotland.

DF can move anywhere at the moment, so, can people tell me some good towns, villages, cities to look into?  We don't want to pay crazy amounts for rent but we also don't want to live in a terrible or unsafe area.  £900 is our absolute top and we would like to be able to find a decent place.  I have looked on rightmove.co.uk but I am just not familiar with towns and such (neither is DF as he has lived most of his life in Leicester or Bedford).

Suggestions, please (and thanks in advance!)!
I am the architect of my destiny.

I like Berkshire...I don't personally know about living there but it's nice and it's probably going to be where we will live when I move there as his parents live in Colnbrook.

a few in Scotland.

I don't know whereabouts in Scotland you're looking at, but i live in Linlithgow, which is the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, and is just 18 miles from the centre of Edinburgh and 32 miles from the centre of Glasgow.
We have a beautiful ruined palace (where Mary was born), a loch with trout, swans, ducks, geese & coots, a canal where people go narrow-boating, a monthly farmer's market, and an annual riding of the marches festival.

We have 15,000 people, 11 pubs (one of which has won the Sunday Mail Pub of the Year award several times), 3 supermarkets, 4 banks, 3 bookies, 4 bakeries, 2 Indian restaurants, 3 Chinese takeaways (and 1 sit-in Chinese), 1 Italian restaurant, 2 'fine dining' restaurants, loads of hairdressers shops, 3 beauty salons, 2 chemists, 3 vets, 2 dentists practices, and a nice deli.

We are on the mainline railway between Glasgow & Edinburgh, we are also close to the MacArthur Glen outlet shops at Livingston, Beecraigs Country Park, and only about 20 miles from Stirling.

How's that?  :)

I live in York and can tell you that for 900 you could find a very nice house, in a good area.  No problem.
In fact, I think you would be able to find that for about 700-850.  Check out Lawton's Lettings.  They have a good website-easily accessible.

I know that housing in the city of Oxford itself is very expensive. But I'm sure there are other towns nearby that would be more affordable.

York is obviously the best choice!   :P  Just kidding.  But, I also live there, and can say you can find some really nice places to rent for what you are looking to spend.  If you really are able to spend that, you could probably look in the outer areas of York and look to buy, depending on if you can get a mortgage.  We also have handy army barracks!   :P  Plus there is loads of history and many pubs.  I wouldn't necessarily go into all of them, but hey they are there.  There are many nice and some very quaint restaurants here too.  But, for shopping, I hear that Leeds is better, but it's only a 30 minute train ride away.  Ooooh, and we have museums and huge church built on an old Roman fort.  Hmmm... okay, I'm done now.  But I really like living here.  Bet you can't tell though!   :P

Another York plus is that it is in a central position on the national rail network, - 2 hours to London, 2 1/2 hours to Endinburgh.

Ooooh, and we have museums and huge church built on an old Roman fort.
And a pub built on an old Roman bathhouse.

I've actually been to Linlithgow!  The last time I was in Scotland, I drove there and it was such a lovely place.  I loved the palace (took loads of pictures because I am a dorky medievalist).  Now, if I could get them to let me restore the palace and live in it, I would be a very happy (although extremely in debt) girl!  I believe the companies are near either Glasgow or Edinburgh so this lovely little town is a real possibility.  And I loved it there!  Actually, I just really, really love Scotland.  I swear it is my favorite place on earth! ;D

Anything in Guildford or anywhere in Surrey?  I know you didn't mention it, but we need more people here ;D

Actually, there are a few companies in Surrey!  Want to tell me more?  :D

York is obviously the best choice!

And York has two votes!  I have been to York as well and fell in love with the place the minute I got there (that medievalist thing again--it still has the city walls...swoon...).  It was my favorite place I visited in England. But, loving something as a tourist and loving something as a local is very different.  Glad to hear it is as great as I thought it was.

Ok, folks, that's a great start.  Keep town suggestions coming (because I have no idea where the job will actually be and I am starting a list of towns).
I am the architect of my destiny.

Cambridgeshire is really expensive.  For the amount of money you are talking about you could get a nice place, but it is not as nice as Glasgow, I lived there for two years.
