Chow Chows
« on: May 16, 2007, 06:15:18 PM »
Has anyone taken a chow chow breed or mix to the UK?? My DH just spoke with BA getting info on flying, and BA said that our chow mix needs to be described as a breed other than Chow, as Chows have a reputation as aggressive (how ironic, our dog couldnt be more sweet and placid if he tried!) and we will have problems with taking him in???!! But on all of his paperwork it says Chow x and we cant change that!! Im wondering if he's just talking about the actual flight and not to do with the PETS scheme per se, so we could label his crate as another breed- but will they look at all his paperwork??
*sigh* just one more thing to worry about.....

As you can see from my pic we have a chow chow/collie mix. Since I now know this, I will make sure the paperwork when we start the process of getting her ready says collie mix just to be on the safe side! Our Kylie is so laid back you can step on her she makes no noise, doesn't even bark unless the doorbell rings and if you weren't listening for a bark you wouldn't hear it! She is such a sweetie! I do not see how our mix could be considered aggressive, either.

I hope you find a way to handle this. Please keep us updated.

Yes it seems silly doesnt it when you know your dog is so sweet that they would be worried about aggression! I can understand it of course that they want to protect themselves, but its just ironic. They also mentioned the snub-nosed breeds that they wont fly- this makes sense to me, but Im so relieved none of ours are snub-nosed else I dont know what we would do!!!

They won't fly some terriers either, as I found out when I called.  One of my dogs is a terrier, but, they goofed on the paperwork and put Chihuahua (what my other dog is).  So, both sets of paper say Chihuahua so I don't have to worry, well, as long as they don't look too closely (thankfully, my terrier is only 14 pounds---umm, a big chihuahua ::)).

Good luck with flying your dogs!

Chows are on the "dangerous dog list" I always thought you couldn't have them in the UK. (Allthough I may be wrong...but I swore they were apart of the Dangerous Dogs Act)

The sale of pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro and others is BANNED. Bans on all dogs "appearing... to be bred for fighting or to have the characteristics of a type bred for that purpose"

Chows were breed as a guard dog and are a mix of spitz and mastiff.

I'd check though before you ship the dog off. It might cause you more problems in the end if you lie about the breed.

For us, we adopted her last November and the shelter did a guess. When I spoke with our vet she said it was a chow chow/collie mix as you do not say collie/chow chow mix. I will have to look more into this. Can you just seach for dangerous dogs act? I would hate to leave her behind but it would be even worse to bring her along to find out they will put her to sleep due to being on a list, if that is what they would do.

They are not listed on the list of dangerous dogs. I did find this from BA.

www.baworldcargo.com/products/How%20to%20measure%20your%20dog.pdf

It says the kennel needs to be larger for chow chows. If anyone can find out where it says chows chows are banned, if that is the case. I would love to see it. I am now worried.

I have yet to find it. I swore it was the UK...it might have been another country. I was talking to a friend that has an Akita and we went through the dog list. I wish I could remember the website.

Don't worry...I might be wrong. Call the airlines? or have your boyfriend/husband call a local vet

I doubt that a guess about the dog's parentage will be a problem.  Your paperwork  reads 'mix' or 'heinz 57', right?

Chows are not on the dangerous dogs list in the UK- only 4 breeds are, and chows arent one of them. http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/domestic/ddogsleaflet.pdf
