SSN for dependent?
« on: June 06, 2007, 12:13:15 PM »
I haven't filed my US taxes, which I know I need to do. My problem is with the SSN that is needed for dependents. My DS doesn't have one yet, as we haven't done the registration in London yet, mainly because we simply don't have the time off work/money to make the trip for now. Do I absolutely need him to have a SSN to file taxes and list him as a dependent??

If you really haven't the time then you could always not claim, file the return now and amend it later on once youv've made the trip to London or the US to get the SSN.

A couple of tips:
1. If you receive child benefit you'd still have to declare it as taxable income on the "Other income" line, and
2. Don't forget to check if you qualify for the refundable child credit because you may find the IRS will give you money even if you haven't paid any!

Ok. How do I put the child tax credit in as income when it is in DHs name? I don't plan on filing jointly. And I'm drawing the conclusion from your response that I DO need him to have a SSN before I can file and list him as a dependent? Oh, I really am going to lose my mind on this.
