Things to see in Devon and Cheshire Areas
« on: June 30, 2007, 06:30:06 AM »
Hello everyone! I'm finally heading back to the UK to be with my partner for hopefully just under 2 weeks (although work is currently trying to deny me taking this much time off) in mid-July. We've been together 17 months doing the LDR thing, but I haven't been back to the UK area since last July because upon returning home I had a bad fall down cement steps and shattered my right leg tib/fib and broke my left index finger in 3 places! So I'm excited but still feel a bit like a tourist as this will only be my forth trip and two of those were under a week! So I do want to see some things. If anyone can recommend any fun things, activities, historical sites etc. to see in the Devon or Cheshire area (mum - who I will be meeting for the first time (nervous!) lives there and my partner got her final residency in Manchester so we will be living up that way once I move - which is planned for Sept. yay! - well should we get the visa approved hehe) It would be very much appreciated. I think the current game plan is since we haven't seen each other since May, when we got engaged the last day of our trip here in NY, we want to celebrate our engagement so we're going to spend one night in a hotel in London if we can find a decent rate since I'm flying into LHR from JFK - that way I can see a lil bit more of London (hopefully if I can get around, since they just removed the screws from my leg with yet another surgery last week!) then head to Paris for 2-3 nights and do Disney (just something silly, fun couple time) one of those days - so any Paris must see's feel free to let me know too :) ... then make Croyde Bay our home turf for the last week - booking a self catering place for the week and then will drive and spend 1-2 days in Manchester/Cheshire area somewhere then... We're also going to have to spend a good day putting together the Fiance Visa application... so it probably will all go fast, but I am so looking forward to a proper holiday together and planning our life together and getting used to the idea this is where I'm going to be living soon  :D If anyone knows of ways or attractions that may be easier for me to get around - less walking, steps etc. even better! I'm still limping and although I think I'll be able to handle some walking, I am deffinitly not back to full status by any means - which really stinks... Thanks so much and hey if anyone needs any NY or Long Island advice - PM me, I'd be happy to help!

Cheers!
Angela

Hi -- I live in Cheshire, my favourite area is Chester. It is a lovely historical town, you can see some lovely buildings, a cathedral, learn about roman history... and do some shopping :-). It always pays to read someone's whole post...I just scanned through again and saw the bit about less walking. To help with the walking part in Chester or London I highly recommend the bus tours. I haven't been on the one in Chester but love the London ones. They will drive you all around, give you all your historical information and you can get off to explore any of the attractions further. You might want to check out this site: http://www.chester.gov.uk/main.asp?page=436

Hope that helps a bit.

Helena

I used to live in Devon, so I can name a few.  Prickly Ball Farm is a hedgehog hospital (way cute), it's online.  Buckfast Abbey is very interesting, as is Exeter (where I used to live).  Dartmoor is cool, but I'll warn you, the ponies will molest you unless you're packing serious amounts of Polos.  Most of the Devon coastline is gorgeous, so any of the towns along there.
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

Angela - does she live in Devon or Cheshire?
Hopefully you're aware that the 2 places are nowhere near eachother...  :)

Thanks to everyone who've responded - some good tips, deffinitly will check them all out! I was thinking the buses myself figuring it would save a bit of walking then we can just get off where we want look around and hopefully get back on... I'm sure I can handle some walking, worse comes to worse I just will have to get a foot massage at the end of the day hehehehe... the ponies sound fantastic haha my gf seems to think we can swim with wild dolphins there too, which I personally don't believe her! ;) And yep do know they are different areas lol mum lives in let's see if I can get this town right Congleton? so I know we will be spending a night or two up North

Hi Angela, I am a Long Island girl transplanted to Manchester, have been in and out of the city since 1993 when I was here as a student. Anyway, Manchester is a fantastic place to be. I don't know what part of Cheshire you will be in, but I say (if the weather is nice) visit the Edge at Alderley Edge (the land just stops...) and head out to Jodrell Bank for a few hours, watch the cows eating grass at the edge of the radio telescope, skip Wilmslow all together as its boring. Congleton isn't far down the A34 from Alderley Edge, Jodrell Bank etc...You can also head into Manchester for a nice day out. Today we went to the Museum of Science and Industry and my 18 month old really enjoyed it (as much as an 18 month old can) Anyway, Cheshire is lovely! Enjoy!
