How to ship
« on: July 09, 2007, 07:57:07 PM »
When we move were not really taking a lot of our furniture- just a tv and a crib, and then personal items such as clothes, books etc. What is going to be the best way to get this stuff over there? im guessing theres not enough stuff to justify the expense of a container, so what are our alternatives?

Are you sure you want to go to the expense of shipping a TV that won't work over there without a transformer?

I would investigate your options for running it in the UK before you go to the expense of shipping it. Between what you pay in shipping, buying transformers and what it would be worth selling it on craigslist for, you might well be able to get quite close to what an equivalent will cost you there....

The only electronic equipment I'm taking over is my cordless drill and some high end stereo equipment that I bought in the UK originally anyway. Everything else is getting sold or stored here for now.

There are lots of shipping companies that will do partial containers or ship by air.

Get quotes from any of the shippers people on here have mentioned and they'll usually work with you to ship things in the way that works best for your situation.

(I used We Ship Express, who shipped everything by FedEx air. Expensive, but it was what I needed to get things in the right amount of time and with the least worries.)
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

I'm pretty certain that even with a transformer, your TV won't work. UK uses the PAL system and the US uses the NTSC system. So you should really investigate whether that is going to work first.

I'm no expert, so please do check!

DH is an AV tech and he says unless it was PAL compatible it wouldn't even work here.

Yeah, i recall something about the TVs having some PAL thing on them as well.  It's something to do with the hookup on the back of the tele. Looks totally different.  I'd just sell it and use that to start saving for a new one.
