But back on topic, yes, you can't really compare whole countries well like this. It's just too subjective.

Without a doubt!  ;)

I stand for freedom of speech. Some people take other people comments apart, why?
I like to read everyones comments.
I respect others views of living in the two countries.
A favorite expression I copied is "why do we have vanilla or chocolate ice cream?"
You can each come up with the answer.
I hope people are happy where ever they are.
I continue to enjoy members observations of the UK.

Imo the Pros to the US:

Cons to the US
4. ridiculous insurance prices on cars
5. ridiculous prices on cars

pros to the UK
5. cheap car prices

Interesting........New car prices are cheaper in the US and A but used cars are cheaper and better in the UK.  You also have more freedom of choice in the UK.

I have found insurance in the UK to be exactly the same as US.  It's really nice having no claims bonus.  It also helps to get "Letters of Experience" from both your US and UK insurance companies.

How do you have more freedom of choice here when the choice is so limited? In the US, there's so much to choose from, so many products, shops, places to go, it's part of what gives it the faster pace of life. But in the UK, I find the choices really limited - which in turn limits your freedom to choose.

I think choices may be limited in that you can't go into one huge shop and have the same choice, but if you are prepared to shop around I'm not sure that choice is limited compared to the US, just different.

Have you gone shopping in the states, in a biggish city? Trust me, the choice here is not only different, it's limited. Now, don't get me wrong, we're not talking Russian breadlines limited, but in comparison to the variety of stuff easily available in the states, it's limited. IMO

& It's not a matter of merely going to say, a Target vs having to shop around here. Even the variety of small shops, and different types of bigger shops, and everything inbetween is staggering.

I think it's a combination of the free market, capitialism on steroids, the support for small businesses and innovation, and the truly multicultural population that creates big enough demands for all sorts of things, all of which the UK is lacking or has in very small doses in comparison.

I agree. There are lots of things in the US that you can't get here, but it works both ways. I know if I ever went back to the US, I'd be bemoaning my lack of options there now that I'm used to what I can get here in the UK.

Have you gone shopping in the states, in a biggish city?

Yup.

Well, maybe it's Belfast then, but I think that the choice is more limited here than in the US. For every one thing I can't get there that I can get here, there's like dozens of things I can't get here that I can easily get there.

I would imagine that the difference between Belfast and London is huge in this respect, and much bigger than the difference between New York and London!

Yes.

Didn't mean to sound patronizing with asking, I didn't know if you'd been to the states or not, and was just wanting to put your perspective in context. Sorry if it came across weird.

I think London is a world unto itself, no? I suppose you'd have to have two different threads: London vs the US, and London v the rest of the UK: Pros & Cons!

But I would agree that there would be more choice in London than in Belfast, and more choice in New York than in London, but less difference in choice between London and New York than Belfast and New York? But New York still trumps London ;)

Stella, I totally agree with you but I think it may be more of a Norn Iron thing than a UK thing.   I can't think of a specific example off the top of my head, but I know there have been threads of various things other people have found in England, for example, that when I go look in my local store like Tesco, or look in Belfast for it, it's nowhere to be found.  There definitely isn't a lot of choice in this neck of the woods.

No problem.

I should also point out that I love Belfast, and am not being disparaging in my comment above!
