I kept recipes in a database for a while, but in order to cook from them I had to print them, and I hated the waste of printing a new one every time. Hence the accordion file.

Ok, this is going to sound horribly geeky, but I wrote a web-based database program for my recipe collection.  I'm able to sort by type (dessert, side, main, etc), main ingredient, season and by my own personal rating.  There's also a search feature.

Cait, that's totally geek-ilicious! And I worship you for it!!

Do you sell your database program??

I thought of that too...haven't quite worked out how to get around it yet.  :(

I do like that cookbook shelf! That would also help with the problem of spilling on the recipe! I'm sure something could be found to place on it to keep the book from closing.

I think you can buy book weights that keep pages open.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Yep, I've got one...I think I got mine at Levenger, but I'm sure they exist somewhere in the UK as well!

Something that has worked for me over the years is a flip photo album - the kind that opens flat and has flip-up pages on both sides.   I either glue the recipe to an index card or rewrite it on one and then slip it into the flip up pages of a photo album.  This way you can see both sides through the clear plastic and it keeps the recipe cards clean with the plastic.  Also it is easy to just flip through to find what you are looking for.  I have 2 that I take with me when we move so that I've got some of our favorite recipes until the rest of our stuff arrives.  They are compact and handy.  I also give new brides or graduates a small photo album with recipes as a gift - the small booklet size.

That's a great idea, Debinator! I like the photo album method.
