Ah the information highway...  I am skeptical of articles like that, seems everyone is always trying to find the bad in everything and since anyone with a keyboard and an internet connection can be a published author via internet, you just never can tell what should be believed/not.  Articles like that make for good entertainment if nothing else but NSA spyware?  Have we really reached that level of paranoia here in the U.S.?  It's just the sort of vibe that makes me count the days until I land on the other side of the pond.

BTW, the iPhone is an incredible device and yes, takes some getting used to as it's not all Micro-shafted but as any MAC/Apple devotee will attest to, one you go MAC, you never go back.   ;)

My daughter would love an iPhone, but it's more than I need.  The cheapest contract service I've seen for one in the U.S. is $69.99 a month--more than I want to pay.

Hopefully this news bodes well for European pricing of the iPhone!

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple Inc.'s price cut of its iPhone and new lineup of iPod players are expected to ring in healthy holiday sales, but Wall Street investors accustomed to Apple's meaty profit margins appear a bit disappointed.

Apple stock dropped more than 5 percent after the price cut was announced Wednesday, closing at $136.76, down $7.40 cents. In extended trading, the share price fell another $1.01.

Meanwhile, gadget enthusiasts who snapped up the ballyhooed iPhone before Wednesday are coping with a bitter aftertaste now that it is $200 cheaper within 10 weeks of its introduction.

The price cut, from $599 to $399 for the 8-gigabyte iPhone, immediately set off a debate on online tech forums between early adopters who said paying a premium price came with the territory and those who said they felt burned. The price reduction was too much too soon, some complained.

In a discussion on The Unofficial Apple Weblog site, the views were split roughly evenly.

Many customers took the iPhone price cut in stride, however. Ryan Roth, who bought one for $599 on Friday after months of research, chalked up his purchase to "the worst timing ever."

"I realize this is not their problem: I agreed to the original price — it's my fault," said Roth, 32, of New York, who has been thinking about getting a cell phone for four years but held out until the last week. "It just kinda sucks."

But some relief is in sight.

Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris said anyone who purchased an iPhone within the past 14 days and has the receipt can get a full refund under Apple's return policy if they haven't opened the product. If they have opened it, they still can get a refund of the price difference.

The steep price cut less than three months after the iPhone's launch on June 29 — and the discontinuation of the 4-gigabyte iPhone, which sold for $499 — were surprising from Apple, which usually keeps prices steady while adding new features. It normally discounts products only when they begin to get old.

Analysts said quick discounts are typical for the cell phone industry, however. The world's best-selling cell phone, Motorola Razr, for instance, debuted at $499 but can now be bought for less than $100.

"This is about Apple learning how to become a cell phone retailer," said Jeff Kagan, an independent telecommunications industry analyst based in Atlanta. "All of a sudden it's in the cell phone business, and everyone is trying to figure out how to measure it, and we don't know yet."

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company is on its way to selling 1 million iPhones in the United States by the end of September.

The newest iPod media players, also announced Wednesday, include a model called iPod Touch that incorporates the iPhone's touch-screen and adds the ability to wirelessly download songs directly from the new iTunes Wi-Fi Store. Also new are a version of the best-selling iPod, the Nano, that plays video and a larger capacity, 160-gigabyte version of the video iPod, newly dubbed the iPod Classic.

Apple also announced a partnership with Starbucks: Starting in October, the coffee chain's icon will light up on the Touch whenever a user nears a shop that has Wi-Fi access. Users can then download the song that's playing in that Starbucks shop or get a list of the 10 most recent songs played.

Apple executives said the revamped and expanded iPod line — in which the iPhone is recast as the top model — is the company's most robust lineup ever for the holiday season. In 2006, Apple sold a record 21 million iPod players during the holiday quarter, about 50 percent more than in the same period the year before.

Apple has now sold more than 110 million iPods since they debuted in 2001.

Don't hold yer breath APstyle!

The phone operators here 'may' pass on the price cut savings as I'm pretty sure the volume discounts will be affected, it's then up to the networks if they want to 'cut' the retail price of the phone on the high street as such - I think they might, but then only offer it on say an 18 month contract or something...

whichever way, I'll probably have a contract on one of our many busienss phones up for renewal just after UK launch and i'll probably get one to see if it's any good. If not, i'll just return it...

The amount of excitement about this phone is crazy, Apple are a 'consumer' focussed company and they know most consumers will happily pay right through the nose for anything that's white and has a Apple logo on it - the proof of that is a $200 dollar price cut within 3 months of launch...  whichever way you dress that up, it's got to be an example of just how much profiteering Apple can get away with in this sector!

lets see what happens in the UK for this phone..!

Hi all!

November 9th is a date for you all to go spend a night sitting in front of an Carphone Warehouse store!

£269 for the what had better be the 8GB model ! plus of course the price and costs of the airtime plan on top of that..   cheapest being £35/month! and like I suspected - its an 18month one at that! so it's £269 + £630 = £899 as the minimal cost outlay over that period. They do a £45 and £55 per month plans too which works out as £1079 and £1259.

I think the price plans are overpriced for what's meant to be a 'consumer' orientated phone - should have offered a £25/month plan...

Will be available on O2 and via Carphone Warehouse...

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/20070918/tts-uk-apple-telefonica-britain-ca02f96_6.html

No 3G support and hence why O2 have been 'downgradingupgrading' their network to support the slower EDGE standard this 1st generation iphone has...

I'll definitley be ....  giving it a miss!

Expect a storm of publicity over the next 6 weeks!

Ouch. Well at least the overall price is somewhat comparable to the new US pricing; I was expecting minimum £300 for the phone alone here.  But you're right, £35 per month is way too much.  I mostly use my phone for texting, and brief phone calls to the missus.   I currently have a pay-as-you-go Virgin phone and £10 usually lasts me a whole month!  I think I'll wait a few months and see of Apple lowers the price yet again!

I decided today, that I am going to get one for DF right when they come out.  It's near his birthday and he has been talking about it for AGES.  Now...I know he will want to keep his current phone number which is on Orange, so I don't know how I will manage that.  I don't mind putting the contract under my name...but getting the number switched will be tough.

Any advice??

Hi Karin,

It's 'relatively' straight forward - it's called number porting. In short, you end the contract with your current airtime provider and 'port' the number across to a new provider (can be the same provider as well) take a new contract out with the handset and plan of your choice and bobs yer uncle!

There's probably early termination clauses such as pay up the rest of yoru contract if you want to come out early and the usual credit check rigmarole involved etc - but its quite an easy ish process.

Hope the hype matches all the hot air yer better half's been sayin !

I hope so too Dennis.

I figured that was the process for switching the number, but how can I do it secretly without his knowledge?  He does leave his mobile at home all day and I have access to his current Orange details (he's past the contract renewal period, so it should just be a case of cancelling the service).

If I buy the phone from Apple - does it come without a plan, i.e. I then have to go to O2 or Carphone Warehouse and set up the contract separately.  That might be a way to give him the phone, but he can deal with all the switching etc.

Thanks!

As much as I love expensive gadgets i'll be giving this one a miss.  The yearly cost is ridiculous and I maybe spend £15 a month on my phone currently.

Plus if the battery life is anything like the ipods battery I wouldn't get much use out of it anyway.  ::)

Hi Karin,

With access to his stuff..  Sounds like you wear the trousers in the relationship!  ;)

Talk to orange and request the PAC number, you get 30 days (I think) to go forward with the transfer - so maybe 10 days or so before his bday, you start the process. Once you are sent the PAC code, you go to Carphone warehouse and buy the iphone. Seeing as you are out of contract and beyond with orange, you wont have to pay up any more to them, ie you're cancelling the contract and number porting. Present Carphone warehouse with the PAC code and usually within a few days the number will be ported to the new iphone. If you kinda get the timing right, hopefully it'll 'switch' on the actual phone systems on his birthday!

You won't be able to buy the iphone from the Apple store as far as i'm aware right now. The deal is to get it from Carphone Warehouse exclusively and only on O2 and with a new contract. The handset currently is NOT contract or SIM free.

Hope this helps!

One of the wire stories, maybe Reuters or AFP, said you could buy the iPhone at Apple store on Regeant's Street.

Hiya

Yeh, I reckon there's going to be some sort of deal where Apple store somehow tie in with Carphone warehouse and O2 - in these initial news stories they do seem to say its carphone warehouse who have struck the deal with o2 to bring out the iphone, hasn't really been a mention of being able to buy in apple stores...
guess we'll find out soon enough...

Meanwhile I'm looking out for the HTC TyTN2 and the HTC Shift...   ;)

Hiya all!

You heard it here first !  (well maybe not !)

If any of you are heading off to france after november 29th, you can pick up an UNLOCKED iphone from there. It's unlocked officially by Apple as French law makes it illegal to offer special deals on mobile phones.

If you REALLY have to have one of these things but don't want a contract - it's a possibility...   catch of course is..

It'll cost substantially more than the subsidised prices - I'd say between £399-£499 any more than that and it'll just be absurd.

Of course, the Ebay speculators will head off over there over the first week they're out, spend some time quaffing some of that french wine and buy up as many unlocked iphones as they can and sell em off for crazy £500-750 buy it now auctions! here in the UK!!  *cough cough..  lookin on the eurostar site right now ..  ;)
