UK Apple iPhone latest Pricing!
« on: July 30, 2007, 12:48:54 PM »
Don't say I don't look after you lot !!!

If you are one of the many people hankering after the iphone and waiting for a UK release and pricing then here's the latest info I've found

£260 for the 4GB (so around $520 USD)

£352 for the 8 GB (about $700 USD)

And £528 for a 'special early edition' (whatever the hell that is!) (about $1060 USD)

Obviously these are prices just for the phone and you'll have to fork out on top of that for the mandatory contract it'll no doubt be bundled with - I'd expect the contracts will be around the £30 or £35 per month range at the very leasat and probably for an 18 month contract. I think O2 are the network trying to secure rights at the moment and maybe exclusivity as well...

http://www.handtec.co.uk/section/158/1/apple/9a4890e0011801efc57d6c752cdde849

have a look there ...

Also, there are some reports of people 'cracking the unlock' to allow different providers SIMs to work, whilst it's true they've been busy trying to crack it, and got it to work on some networks, the consensus is to leave it a while longer as only some networks seem to allow the unlocked phones to work and even then not properly - be wary of any sellers saying anything different !

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

How do these prices compare to the US prices?  Are we paying double as per usual?   ::)

When I was back home and they put out the iPhone, they run around $400-$500. So, they are not TOO much more expensive here then in the states.

Crazzychk is right the prices are $499 for the 4GB and $599 for the 8GB. DB and I went to the Apple store and played around with them last week and it just made me realize I'm perfectly happy not having one. They are pretty cool, but I don't like how you have to scroll with your finger, and the web pages are pretty small on the screen. I don't think it has a battery or SIM card slot, at least not in the US version. I can see how they would be good for someone who travels a lot and needs to be able to access the web.

I have one in the states.  It is quite nice.  Granted the web pages load small, but that's the beauty--they have multi-touch controls that expand them into 100% (or larger) size just by dragging your fingers.  You then view portions of it and with the wisp of a finger, you can move to other parts of the page.  Scrolling through my music library and photos is kind of fun with a flick of my finger.

That said, it isn't for everyone.  In my case, it just made sense as a) I needed a new US phone, b) my existing contract was up, c) I needed a new iPod and d) I desperately needed email and web access on the road.  I've been using a few apps like VNC to control some remote servers which is also pretty necessary for my line of work.

I've been very happy with it.  Not sure I'd pay UK prices though, and not sure how I'll get it to work in the UK as ATT roaming plan doesn't have an international component and the SIM is still locked (for now).

This sucks. I was really looking forward to buying one here but I'm sure as heck not going to pay $700!  I might slum it and buy the 4gb, what what good would that be?

Yo Apstyle!

Yeh, and dont forget the contract charges on top! plus the cost of calls you make and data downloads and dont forget the music from the ipod store also cost money! - I suspect the reason they made the capacity of the devices so small is to deliberatley coerce users into always visiting the itunes store to buy more music and constantly swap out content on their devices. Good for the average apple consumer in their eyes, but easily seen through for those who dont buy into the whole Apple 'consumerism' marketing machine!

Scarlett - the iphones DO have a SIM card slot and they DO have a battery. The SIM card slot currently officially only works with AT&T sim cards and contracts - some people have 'cracked' the sim slot to accept other carriers sim cards but with limited success so far. Expect that to change as the hackers learn more and can unlock it better.

The Battery is sealed inside the phone itself. It's meant to be sent back to apple for a replacement when it starts to lose it's capacity to hold a charge.

Whichever bod or bodies at apple thought that was a good idea need to be taken outside and shot!

I'm going to wait a good 6 months to a year after the uk launch and pick one up on ebay - and thats only if the reviews of it on the uk networks suggest it's performance is anything worthwhile.

I'm going to buy an Apple computer soon to see what all the fuss is about their home operating system and see if it can be a replacement to my windows machine as so many people keep shouting about. What instantly puts me off is the lack of software I need for specific uses - so I'm porbably just going to use the Apple for just 'after hours' use - which really only amounts to internet surfing and possibly photo/video manipulation.

I certainly won't buy their products at the moment brand new - value isnt there, if they keep up the current limits and rather absurd product oversights - i probably never will and just buy their stuff if I want to, 2nd hand.

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Oh, ok. I misunderstood about the SIM cards then. I guess I just phrased the battery part wrong, that's what I meant.

I wouldn't buy it firsthand either, if I did get one it would be on eBay after they found ways to unlock it for other networks and SIM cards. I think I'm just weary of getting the first round of any electronics thing since I"m sure there are still loads of kinks to work out too.

I would love one of these phones. Not too bad in terms of price difference. The thing with them though, they have a software that is almost like a GPS chip and if anyone wants to see what you watch, say, etc they can. Typical. I don't want anything to do with it because of that. It's worse than spyware imo.

Either way, good deal considering the differences when it comes to Ipods here and the US

Dennis,

I have a MacBook 2.0 that I bought last year during a vacation back home in the US and brought it back here.  This was my first Mac. Until then, I had been a loyal PC user. But I will NEVER go back. I love my Mac!  It's especially great for digital photos and music, which is my main use. And it's extremely rugged and has survived two trips to Baghdad. I've never bothered to install Windows on my machine because my mac has the software I need including Microsoft Office for Mac.  My only complaint is I can't find a good financial program like Microsoft Money.  Quicken no longer makes Mac updates and iBank is too buggy.

Ok back to the iPhone. I already own two iPods (mini and older non-video 20gb) and two cell phones (one UK, one US). I was hoping to buy the iPhone to replace all four of those devices. I am a techno geek so I'll probably still end up buying one despite the cost. Just hoping the price is not as bad as these rumors.

Hi

Haunted Mansion - this is the first I've heard of anything like this! can you provide a link as to where you've read this? - I'm having great difficulty fathoming Apple would 'secretly' incorporate software to 'spy' on its iphone users conversations and material viewed! - that would be highly illegal and immoral !

I think a rational explanation would be they can 'data mine' your account to see what you've downloaded from them so they can 'tailor' special offers and content to your habits every time you log onto their servers to download the content from them - that is legal and in common practice in many industries already.

ApStyle! - what the hell were you doing in Baghdad?! you couldn't pay me enough to set foot there! as to the Apple - I'm keeping an open mind about what it can do for me at home so I'll see how it goes. As I used to work at Intuit, I know there is a US version of Quicken made for the MAC platform. I'm a little vague as to if it has the same 'limited' multi currency functionality of the last UK Quicken version - but if it does, there are 'ways' to make it work here - even if it's a litle limited ! ;)

There are other personal finance packages that are MAC platform capable and UK orientated - I can have a little dig around and let you know of them and you can trial to see which suits you. From memory, they aren't as 'slick' looking as Money/Quicken but 'get the job done' as such.

seeing as I run my business on Windows software, then many more 'addons' will work with my environment - my mobile/PDA will sync over the airwaves with my outlook inbox if I so choose. If I need some software for a particular requirement - there's lots of choice available. If I just a home user, internet surfing, some spreadsheets and word documents and movies and music user, I'd probably have changed to a MAC to see if i liked it a few years ago - I'm trying to keep an open mind so i'll start off with a 2nd hand mac to see what its like.

I'm a techno 'geek' as well! my latest 'want' is the 'Flipstart micro laptop' which you can see here http://www.dynamism.com/index.shtml - just have a look around the UMPC and laptops and PDA sections! ;)

From what I understand, Quicken has decided to no longer make updates for its Mac version. So if you buy a copy today, you're buying an ancient piece of junk made 5 years ago that even then was a barebones version of the PC edition.

FYI: I'm a journo, hence the Iraq trips.  Amazingly, I was even able to find a Mac power cord in a Baghdad computer shop!   Although as I recall, I paid something ridiculous like $50.

Have you read the other articles relating to it and the rest of the article regarding AT&T?
