Carpet - How much should we expect to pay?
« on: August 04, 2007, 09:25:35 PM »
We are looking to buy carpet for our two bedrooms (one's a double and one's a single) and before we go to a salesman, I'd like to have a rough idea of what we *should* end up paying.

We're not looking for anything over the top, but will need underlay as well.

If anyone has any idea please let me know!! I appreciate it :)

Not sure if this'll help, but my parents just recarpeted our hallway, stairs and landing and it cost I think around £500-£600 for about 25 square metres plus underlay and the fitting. However, we got the carpet at 70% off in the New Year (although apparently their 50% off sale was pretty much permanent anyway).

It depends on the type of carpet really, also whether fitting is included in the purchase of the carpets.

so many variables!

first off... what type of carpet are you looking for?  wool?  long lasting?  something you're willing to replace in 5 years?

we have a local tradesman where we get all our carpets.  he sells remnents.  we've been able to get those for 50% of our carpet & lino needs.

for larger bits we have another carpet guy- who lays both the carpets he sells & the remnents.

when we carpetted 3 bedrooms (1 double, 1 single, 1 box) & hall/stairs/landing we paid 400 pounds.  including carpet, new underlay, grips, wood ply on floor (have floorboards).  we paid 245 for a better quality carpet in a medium size front room.  but i must admit everyone within whom we've spoken says we got an AMAZING deal.  (if you live in northampton/peterborough i'd be happy to give you his details)

we have a 2 bedroom flat. There was absolutley no carpeting when we moved in..the living room cost us £300, our daughters bedroom cost us £150 and our bedroom about £200. We didnt need underlay,so we just used old newspaper underneath.

luckily FIL is a carpenter,so we didnt have to pay anyone to fit it in

Do you mean carpet fitter? I always get my dad to lay my carpets as he's been a fitter for almost 40 years, (plus I get my carpets for next to nothing through him)! ;D

It is only costing us 30 pounds to get our carpet laid, which is in our bedroom and the carpet itself is costing about 180 pounds.  You can get very expensive to very inexpensive carpet.

I'm happy that all of the prices you've quoted seem really low!! I remember having carpet fitted in the US, and it cost thousands!! This is definitely good news!  :)

Hi there!

Tip - Get the best underlay as your wallet/purse allows.

I think I've mentioned that previously, if you did go for a plush expensive carpet, it's effect can be reduced by fitting standard underlay. It just doesn't 'feel' right! - We put in an expensive (to us!) carpet in our living room and I went for a really thick underlay (wasn't the thickest though) and the day it gor fitted it felt wonderful to walk on it with that little 'bounce' feeling!

Other tips have already been mentioned - find a place doing remnants and/or the carpet wholsalers etc in exhchange and mart etc...

Like any product - theres 'super cheap' to 'you what? how much?' !!

Cheers! DtM! West London & Slough UK!

And not forgetting "Are you serious?"   ;)

For small rooms, hallways, and such like it always pays to look around the remnants section, as you'll often find just what you need at a very reasonable price.   I was in one of the carpet places in Norwich a couple of days ago looking for a remnant to do my hallway, and saw plenty of offcuts up to about 8 x 13 ft., all under £50.

Thanks for everyone's responses.

We're going to look this weekend, so hopefully we'll be able to agree on something!

apologies for just now seeing this thread.

we just had our living room & a large bedroom carpeted to the tune of around £600 installed. the carpet we bought was just normal, average quality, but the underlay was the best we could find.

we had all our own doorframe thingies & grippers.

We are looking for carpet too and have been on the hunt. One of the best places we have been to is our local carpet seller.  We were really impressed with his knowledge helping us understand everything and all the differences.  As DH pointed out when we left, we don't get service like that at the big carpet chains like Allied or Carpet Right. The reason being our little carpet seller wants to sell his carpets and that's his career so he will go the extra step for you and making sure you get what you want.  He doesn't even charge to lay it!!

We had ours done 1.5 years ago, living room, stairs and upstairs landing and it was £850.  We also went with an independent carpet man.
